Serengeti National Park Photos

Serengeti National Park Photos

Serengeti National Park photos capture some of Africa's most iconic scenes: endless golden plains, granite kopjes, acacia silhouettes at sunset, big cats on the hunt and the dramatic Great Migration. Browse our gallery for a feel of the landscapes, wildlife and camps you can experience on a private safari. For your own photography, the best light comes in the first and last hours of the day, and a private vehicle with a pop-up roof lets you wait patiently at sightings and position for the perfect shot.

Serengeti Photography Tips

Simple ways to bring home better wildlife photos.

Shoot in Golden Hour

Plan game drives around the first and last two hours of light for warm tones.

Get Low and Steady

Use a bean bag on the window frame instead of a tripod.

Tell a Story

Mix close portraits with wide shots that show the plains and sky.

Be Patient

Wait for behavior: a yawn, a hunt, a mother with cubs.

Protect Your Gear

Carry a dust cover and blower for dry-season drives.

Respect Wildlife

Keep a respectful distance and never ask guides to disturb animals.

Serengeti National Park Photos: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to photograph the Serengeti?

The best time to photograph the Serengeti depends on your subject. January to February offers calving scenes and predator action on the green southern plains, while June to October brings dry-season clarity, dust-filled golden light and dramatic Mara River crossings in the north. The green season from March to May adds moody skies and lush backgrounds. Whatever the month, the softest light falls in the first and last two hours of the day, so plan early starts and late game drives.

What camera gear should I bring to the Serengeti?

A camera body with a telephoto zoom lens, ideally reaching 300 to 400 millimeters or more, is the most useful kit for Serengeti wildlife. Add a wider lens for landscapes, camps and big skies, plus spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a dust blower, because the plains can be dusty. A bean bag steadies long lenses on the vehicle frame. Smartphone users can capture great landscapes too, especially with a compact zoom lens attachment.

Can I fly a drone in Serengeti National Park?

Flying drones in Tanzania's national parks is restricted and requires official permits, which are rarely granted for recreational use. Drones can disturb wildlife and other visitors, so you should not plan on flying one in the Serengeti. Bringing a drone into Tanzania may also require prior authorization. For aerial perspectives, consider a hot-air balloon flight over the central Serengeti, which offers spectacular sunrise views and excellent photographic opportunities.

Is a private safari better for wildlife photography?

Yes, a private safari is ideal for wildlife photography because the vehicle, guide and schedule are yours alone. You can stay at a sighting as long as you wish, wait for behavior or better light, and ask your guide to reposition for cleaner backgrounds. Our Land Cruisers have a pop-up roof and large sliding windows, giving every passenger a clear shooting position. Your guide can also plan early departures and full-day drives around the best light.
