A Serengeti National Park map shows a vast park divided into five main safari zones: the central Seronera Valley, the Western Corridor along the Grumeti River, the northern Serengeti around Kogatende and the Mara River, the eastern plains and kopjes, and the southern plains that flow into the Ndutu area. The main road entrance is Naabi Hill Gate in the south-east, reached from Arusha via Ngorongoro, while airstrips such as Seronera, Kogatende and Grumeti serve fly-in safaris. Knowing these zones helps you match your lodge location to the season and the Great Migration.

View Package →Serengeti National Park is usually divided into five safari areas. The central Seronera Valley offers year-round big cat sightings. The Western Corridor follows the Grumeti River and is busiest around June. The northern Serengeti, around Kogatende and Lobo, hosts Mara River crossings from about July to October. The eastern plains and Gol Kopjes are known for cheetahs, while the southern plains and neighboring Ndutu area host calving season from about January to March.
Most road safaris enter Serengeti National Park through Naabi Hill Gate in the south-east, after driving from Arusha through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ndabaka Gate in the west serves travelers coming from Mwanza and Lake Victoria, while Ikoma Gate lies north-west of Seronera and Klein's Gate in the north-east links with Loliondo and Lake Natron. Your guide chooses the gate that best fits your route, lodges and the current location of the Great Migration.
Fly-in safaris use several airstrips spread across the park, so you can land close to your lodge. Seronera airstrip serves the central Serengeti, Kogatende and Lobo serve the north, Grumeti and Sasakwa areas serve the Western Corridor, and Ndutu and Kusini serve the southern plains. Scheduled light aircraft link these airstrips with Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, and we choose the airstrip and flight times that minimize travel and maximize your time on game drives.
The Great Migration moves in a broad clockwise loop. From about December to March the herds graze the southern plains and Ndutu area, where calving takes place. Around April and May they move through the central and western Serengeti, reaching the Western Corridor and Grumeti River around June. From about July to October they are in the northern Serengeti near Kogatende and the Mara River, before heading south again with the short rains. Timing always varies with rainfall.
The Ndutu area lies mostly within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, right on the south-eastern edge of Serengeti National Park, and the two areas form one continuous landscape. During calving season the herds move freely across this boundary, so safaris often explore both. Different park fees and regulations apply in each area, including off-road driving rules, so your guide plans routes and permits carefully. We include all applicable fees for both areas in your itemized quote.
