Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Tarangire National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Tarangire National Park photos capture some of Tanzania's most distinctive safari scenes: elephant families crossing the dry Tarangire River, giant baobab trees against wide skies, lions resting in the shade and colourful birds such as lilac-breasted rollers and yellow-collared lovebirds. This guide helps you plan your own images, with ideas on subjects, light, camera settings, gear and ethical photography, followed by our photo gallery. The best light comes early and late in the day, and a private vehicle lets you wait patiently at every sighting. Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris designs private tailor-made photographic safaris with flexible, patient expert guides.

Tarangire offers a wonderful variety of subjects for photographers, from intimate wildlife portraits to sweeping landscapes framed by ancient trees. Elephants, baobabs and birds are the stars, but dramatic skies, dusty riverbeds and green-season colour all add depth to your collection. Select a subject below to quickly discover exactly where to find it, when it usually looks best and how to compose a memorable image. Your private guide knows the park's most photogenic areas and can position the vehicle for better light and angles, giving you time to work each scene carefully without any pressure from other vehicles.
HighlightFamilies in the riverbed
Elephant herds gathering along the Tarangire River are the park's signature photograph. Watch for families digging for water in the sandy riverbed, bathing or crossing the valley in long lines. Low angles add drama, while wider frames show the herd in its setting. Patience at the river often brings playful calves and wonderful family interaction.
Tarangire Wildlife →HighlightAncient giants
Tarangire's giant baobabs make striking subjects at any time of day. Use a wide lens to include the sky, the horizon or wildlife for scale, and look for elephants or giraffe beside the trunks. The Lemiyon area is especially rich in large baobabs. Sunrise and sunset silhouettes create dramatic, memorable images that capture the spirit of the park.
Tarangire Map →HighlightSmall but spectacular
Tarangire's birdlife offers endless colour, from lilac-breasted rollers and superb starlings to yellow-collared lovebirds and hornbills. A longer lens and fast shutter speed help with small or moving subjects. Birds near water at the river or Silale Swamp often allow closer views. Ask your guide to stop whenever a colourful bird on a perch catches your eye.
Tarangire Birds →HighlightLions and leopards
Lions are seen regularly in Tarangire and are sometimes found resting in trees, creating unusual and memorable images. Leopards are shy and rarely seen, so be ready when your guide spots one. Early morning offers the best chance of active cats and soft light. Focus on the eyes and keep your shutter speed fast for any movement.
Tarangire Wildlife →HighlightWarm light and dust
In the dry season, low sun and fine dust create a warm, golden atmosphere across Tarangire's plains. Zebra, wildebeest and giraffe moving through this light make beautiful scenes. Shoot towards the light for glowing outlines, or with the light behind you for rich colour. These short windows are the most rewarding times of day for photography.
Best Time to Visit →HighlightStorms and fresh colour
The rains transform Tarangire into a lush, green landscape with dramatic storm clouds and clear air after showers. Baobabs in leaf, wildflowers and newborn animals add fresh subjects, and fewer vehicles make positioning easier. Pack rain protection for your camera, and use the moody, changing skies to add depth and atmosphere to wide landscape images.
Weather & Climate →Light changes quickly in Tarangire, and understanding its rhythm is one of the easiest ways to improve your photographs. Early mornings bring soft, warm light and active wildlife, while midday sun is harsh and often hazy with dust in the dry season. Late afternoon returns the golden glow that makes baobabs and elephants look their best. Select a time of day below to see what it usually offers and how to make the most of it. Your guide plans game drives around these windows, so you are in the right place when the light is at its very best.
Good settings help you capture sharp, well-exposed images in Tarangire's bright, dusty and fast-changing conditions. The simple table below suggests easy starting points for common safari subjects, from elephant portraits and birds in flight to baobab landscapes and low evening light. Treat these figures as a helpful guide rather than strict rules, because every camera, lens and situation is a little different. Practise with your equipment before you travel so that quick changes feel natural and easy in the field. If you are new to wildlife photography, your guide can suggest positions that make each shot easier to achieve.
| Subject | Shutter speed | Aperture | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elephant portrait | 1/1000 s or faster | f/5.6 – f/8 | Focus on the eye |
| Birds in flight | 1/2000 s or faster | f/5.6 – f/8 | Continuous autofocus |
| Herds at the river | 1/1000 s | f/8 | Leave space to move |
| Baobab landscapes | 1/250 s | f/8 – f/11 | Level the horizon |
| Low light | 1/250 s | Widest aperture | Raise ISO, use a beanbag |
General starting points – adjust for your camera and conditions.
The right gear makes photography in Tarangire more enjoyable and productive, without needing to carry everything you own. A telephoto lens for wildlife and birds, a wider lens for baobab landscapes, plenty of memory and good dust protection cover most needs. Use the simple interactive checklist below to carefully prepare your camera bag, ticking off each item as you pack it. Remember that light aircraft have strict luggage limits, so choose versatile equipment and soft bags. Modern smartphones also work very well for landscapes and close sightings, so every traveller can bring home beautiful memories of the park.
Great wildlife photography always puts the welfare of animals, people and the environment first. Explore the six golden rules below, which reflect widely accepted good practice on private safaris throughout Tanzania. Following them protects the wildlife you have travelled so far to see and helps other visitors enjoy natural behaviour too. Your private guide shares these values and will gladly help you find ethical ways to capture strong images, from patient waiting to thoughtful positioning, quiet behaviour and timing.

View Package →The best time to photograph Tarangire is the dry season from about June to October, when elephant herds gather along the Tarangire River and thinner vegetation gives clear views. Dust and low sun create warm, golden light in the early morning and late afternoon. The green season from about November to May adds lush backgrounds, dramatic skies, flowering trees and excellent bird photography. Whatever the month, plan early starts and late game drives, because midday light is harsh and wildlife is less active.
A camera body with a telephoto zoom lens reaching around 300 to 400 millimeters is the most useful kit for Tarangire, especially for birds and elephants at the river. A wider lens is essential for baobab landscapes and big herds in their setting. Bring spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a dust blower, because dry-season roads are dusty. A bean bag steadies long lenses on the vehicle frame. Smartphones also work well for landscapes and close elephant encounters at the river.
Flying drones in Tanzania's national parks, including Tarangire, is restricted and requires official permits, which are rarely granted for recreational use. Drones can disturb wildlife and other visitors, so you should not plan on flying one at any point during your safari. Bringing a drone into Tanzania may also require prior authorization. Instead, focus on wide-angle landscapes from the vehicle and viewpoints over the Tarangire River valley, which give a strong sense of scale without the need for any aerial photography equipment.
To photograph baobab trees in Tarangire, use a wide-angle lens and include the sky, horizon or wildlife for scale. Elephants feeding near a baobab make a classic Tarangire image. Shoot at sunrise or sunset to silhouette the branches, or under stormy green-season skies for drama. Ask your guide to position the vehicle so the light falls from the side, adding texture to the bark. The Lemiyon area in the north is especially rich in large, photogenic baobabs, so allow extra time there.
Yes, a private safari is ideal for photography in Tarangire because the vehicle, guide and schedule are yours alone. You can stay with an elephant herd at the river as long as you like, wait for better light and ask your guide to reposition for cleaner backgrounds. Our Land Cruisers have a pop-up roof and large windows, giving every passenger a clear shooting position. Your guide can also plan full-day drives to reach quieter areas such as Silale Swamp and the southern swamps.
