Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Tarangire National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
A Tarangire National Park map shows a long, narrow park stretching south from the Main Gate in the north. Five areas shape most safaris: the Tarangire River valley, the baobab country of Lemiyon and Matete, the central Silale Swamp, the Burungi and Kuro woodland, and the remote southern swamps such as Gursi and Larmakau. Road safaris arrive from Arusha via Makuyuni, while Kuro airstrip serves fly-in guests. Lake Burunge lies just west of the park, outside the official park boundary. Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris plans private tailor-made routes through every area with expert local guides and comfortable private vehicles.

This illustrative map helps you picture how Tarangire fits together, from the river valley near the Main Gate to the quiet swamps of the far south. Select any numbered pin, or use the list beside the map, to learn what each area offers and when it is usually at its best. The map is not to scale and is designed for planning rather than navigation, which your private guide handles for you. Use it to understand distances, choose areas that match your interests and see why longer stays let you explore beyond the busy northern circuit of the park.
The northern valley near the Main Gate, where dry-season elephant herds drink, bathe and dig in the riverbed.
Tarangire is often described in five main areas, each with its own scenery, wildlife and atmosphere. The northern river valley is the classic dry-season elephant area, Lemiyon and Matete offer baobabs and plains game, Silale Swamp draws buffalo and birds, Burungi and Kuro bring quieter woodland loops, and the southern swamps feel truly remote. Select an area below to learn more about it and the best way to enjoy it on a private safari. Your private guide chooses where to drive each day based on season, water and recent sightings, so you see the very best of the park.
HighlightElephant country
The northern river valley near the Main Gate is the heart of most Tarangire safaris. In the dry season, elephant families, buffalo, zebra and giraffe gather to drink, bathe and dig in the riverbed. Viewpoints above the valley offer wonderful panoramas, and its closeness to the gate makes it ideal for day trips from Arusha.
Tarangire Wildlife →HighlightBaobab country
Lemiyon and Matete in the north are classic baobab landscapes, with giant trees rising above open grassland and acacia woodland. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala graze here, and the scenery is especially wonderful for landscape photography. These areas are rewarding in every season, especially in soft morning and evening light when the baobabs glow gold.
Tarangire Photos →HighlightGreen in the dry months
Silale Swamp in the centre of the park stays green when much of the surrounding land has dried out. It attracts elephants, buffalo and abundant birdlife, and predators often hunt along its edges. Fewer vehicles reach this area than the northern river valley, so it rewards travellers with a full day or an overnight stay.
Tarangire Birds →HighlightWoodland loops
The Burungi circuit and the area around Kuro airstrip offer quieter acacia woodland loops in the west and centre of the park. Lesser kudu, gerenuk and giraffe may be seen with patience, and the drives feel calm and personal. Fly-in guests often begin their safari here, meeting their private guide and vehicle at the airstrip.
How to Get There →HighlightTrue wilderness
The southern swamps, including Gursi and Larmakau, lie far from the Main Gate and receive very few vehicles. They suit travellers with extra time who enjoy solitude, long drives and a real sense of wilderness. Wildlife here can be shy, but the reward is a peaceful, unhurried experience that few visitors to Tarangire ever see.
Tarangire Safari Tours →HighlightBurunge and Randilen
Burunge Wildlife Management Area lies to the west around Lake Burunge, while Randilen lies to the north-east. Several lodges and camps sit in these community-managed areas, offering views towards the park. Different rules and fees apply outside the park, and some activities not allowed inside the park may be possible there with the right arrangements.
Tarangire Fees →Reaching Tarangire National Park is simple, and most private safaris follow a short, scenic road from Arusha. The route heads west to the small town of Makuyuni, then turns south along the access road to the Main Gate, where your guide completes park formalities. From the gate, game drives usually begin along the river valley before continuing to Lemiyon, Matete or Silale Swamp. Follow the route below to see each stage of a typical first day in the park. Your guide adapts the plan to the season, your arrival time and your interests, from elephants to birds and photography.
Knowing the main gates, airstrips and other access points helps you understand how your private safari moves in and out of Tarangire. Most road safaris use the Main Gate in the north, while fly-in guests land at Kuro airstrip in the centre of the park. Several lodges and camps lie outside the boundary in neighbouring Wildlife Management Areas, where different rules and fees apply. The table below summarises each main access point and what it is best for. Your safari planner handles permits and timings for you, so all arrivals and departures run smoothly and without any stress.
| Gate or access point | Location | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tarangire Main Gate | North | Main road entrance from Arusha via Makuyuni |
| Kuro Airstrip | Central | Fly-in access for Tarangire safaris |
| Burunge WMA (Lake Burunge) | West, outside the park | Lodges and camps beside the western boundary |
| Randilen WMA | North-east, outside the park | Lodges on the north-eastern boundary, often via the Main Gate |
Every private Tarangire safari can be shaped around your time, interests and onward plans. A single full day covers the northern river valley, while one or two nights allow early and late game drives and visits to quieter areas such as Silale Swamp. Travellers with more time can explore the remote south or stay in a neighbouring Wildlife Management Area. Select a route idea below to see exactly how different itineraries work in practice. Your safari planner then combines the best areas with lodges and onward parks, creating a route that feels relaxed, rewarding and truly personal to you.

View Package →Tarangire National Park is usually explored in five areas. The northern Tarangire River valley near the Main Gate holds the biggest dry-season elephant herds. The Lemiyon and Matete area offers classic baobab landscapes and plains game. Silale Swamp in the central park draws elephants, buffalo and birds. The Burungi and Kuro area covers woodland loops and the Kuro airstrip. The remote southern swamps, including Gursi and Larmakau, receive far fewer vehicles and suit travelers with extra time who enjoy solitude.
Most road safaris enter through the Tarangire Main Gate in the north of the park. From Arusha, the route follows the paved road south-west toward Makuyuni, then turns south onto the access road to the gate, a drive of roughly two hours. Some lodges lie outside the park in neighboring Wildlife Management Areas to the west and north-east, and your guide plans entry and exit around those locations. Your private guide handles all permits, fees and paperwork at the gate for you.
Yes, Kuro airstrip in the central part of the park serves fly-in safaris, with scheduled and charter light aircraft connecting it with Arusha and other northern circuit airstrips. Flying in saves road time and suits travelers combining Tarangire with the Serengeti or the coast. However, many travelers prefer to drive, because Tarangire is only about two hours from Arusha and the journey links easily with Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro. We recommend the option that best fits your private itinerary, budget and schedule.
No, Lake Burunge lies just west of Tarangire National Park, outside the park boundary, within the Burunge Wildlife Management Area. It is a shallow, seasonal soda lake that can attract flamingos and other water birds when water levels allow. Several lodges and camps are located in this area, offering views toward the park. Because it falls outside the national park, different rules and fees apply, and some activities not permitted inside the park may be possible there with the right arrangements.
For most visitors, the best game drives in Tarangire follow the Tarangire River in the north and continue to Silale Swamp in the central park. These areas hold reliable water in the dry season, attracting large elephant herds, buffalo, giraffes, zebra and predators. The Lemiyon area is excellent for baobab scenery, while the southern swamps offer remote, quieter drives. Your private guide adjusts routes to recent sightings, the season and how much time you have in the park on your trip.
