Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Ngorongoro Crater first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
A good Ngorongoro Crater map shows how the famous caldera sits at the heart of the much larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania. Beyond the crater floor and its forested rim, the area includes the Olmoti and Empakaai highlands, Olduvai Gorge, the Shifting Sands and the Ndutu plains bordering the Serengeti. Most visitors enter through Lodoare Gate near Karatu, descend on the Seneto road and climb out on the Lerai road. This interactive guide explains every area, gate and route clearly and simply for you. Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris plans private tailor-made itineraries that connect these highlights smoothly.

Explore the main areas, gates and landmarks of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on our simplified, illustrative map below. Select any numbered pin, or use the buttons beside the map, to read a short description of each place and what makes it worth visiting. The map is not to scale, but it clearly shows how the crater, highlands, archaeological sites and southern plains fit together between Karatu and the Serengeti. Use it to understand travel distances and why your safari planner carefully sequences each stop. Your private guide will share many more details along the way. Distances here are approximate.
The caldera floor with Lake Magadi, Lerai Forest, Ngoitoktok Springs and Gorigor Swamp, home to dense resident wildlife.
Each part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers a different experience, from wildlife-rich crater game drives to highland walks, archaeological history and seasonal migration action. Choosing which areas to include depends on your interests, available time and the season of your visit. Select an area below to discover its landscapes, highlights and best timing. Many private itineraries combine the crater with Olduvai Gorge on the way to the Serengeti, while adventurous travellers add Empakaai. Your safari planner will recommend the best combination, balancing driving time with unhurried experiences and comfortable overnight stays. Every area rewards curious travellers differently.
HighlightWildlife at its densest
The crater floor holds Lake Magadi, Lerai Forest, Ngoitoktok Springs and Gorigor Swamp, providing water and grazing all year. It is home to black rhinos, lions, hyenas, buffalo, elephants and flamingos. Game drives here are day visits, as overnight stays on the floor are not permitted, making early descents especially valuable for travellers. Arrive early for the best experience.
Ngorongoro Wildlife →HighlightViews, forest and lodges
The forested rim hosts lodges, viewpoints and the Seneto lookout, offering sweeping panoramas into the caldera. Highland forest supports rich birdlife and occasional elephants passing through. Because the rim sits high above the floor, mornings and evenings are cool, so warm layers are essential. Staying here allows wonderfully early descents for quieter sightings. Sunrise views are unforgettable.
Weather & Climate →HighlightHighland craters and walks
The northern highlands hold Olmoti Crater and Empakaai Crater, whose lake often attracts flamingos. Guided rim walks with an armed ranger reveal waterfalls, forest and dramatic views, sometimes towards Ol Doinyo Lengai. Nainokanoka is a nearby Maasai area. These quieter highlands suit active travellers seeking adventure beyond conventional game drives on a private safari. Good boots are recommended.
Ngorongoro Facts →HighlightHuman history and dunes
Olduvai Gorge, with its museum, lies on the road between the crater and the Serengeti and is famous for early human discoveries. Nearby, the Shifting Sands is a crescent-shaped dune of volcanic ash that slowly moves across the plains. Both make rewarding stops, adding history and geology to a wildlife-focused private itinerary. Allow time to enjoy both properly.
How to Get There →HighlightCalving season spectacle
The Ndutu area in the southwest borders the Serengeti and includes Lake Ndutu, Lake Masek and surrounding woodlands. From around December to March, migration herds gather here to give birth, attracting lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Seasonal camps open nearby, making Ndutu one of the most exciting destinations for wildlife photography during these months. Book seasonal camps well in advance.
Best Time to Visit →HighlightHow vehicles move
Lodoare Gate is the main entrance from Karatu, while Naabi Hill Gate connects with the Serengeti. Inside, the one-way Seneto road leads down to the crater floor and the one-way Lerai road climbs back to the rim. The Lemala road offers two-way access on the north-eastern rim. Your guide handles every gate formality for you.
Ngorongoro Fees →Crater game drives follow a carefully managed road system designed to protect the caldera and reduce congestion. Most road safaris arrive from Karatu through Lodoare Gate, climb through highland forest to the crater rim and then follow the one-way Seneto road down to the crater floor. After the game drive, vehicles climb back out on the one-way Lerai road. The Lemala road on the north-eastern rim provides two-way access for nearby lodges. The route below shows the classic sequence, and your guide plans timings carefully to maximise wildlife viewing. Early starts usually mean quieter roads and more active wildlife.
Knowing the main gates and access points helps you understand how Ngorongoro connects with the rest of northern Tanzania. Lodoare Gate links the conservation area with Karatu and Arusha, while Naabi Hill Gate sits on the boundary with Serengeti National Park. Fly-in travellers heading to the calving season often use the airstrip at Ndutu. The table below summarises each access point, its location and when it is most useful. Your safari planner handles all permits and fee payments in advance, so your private guide simply manages the paperwork at each gate. Everything is arranged before you even arrive.
| Gate or access point | Location | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lodoare Gate | South-east | Main road entrance from Arusha and Karatu |
| Naabi Hill Gate | West, Serengeti boundary | Entry from or exit to Serengeti National Park |
| Seneto Descent Road | Western crater rim | One-way road down to the crater floor |
| Lerai Ascent Road | Southern crater rim | One-way road up from the crater floor |
| Lemala Road | North-eastern crater rim | Two-way access for eastern rim lodges |
| Ndutu Airstrip | South-west | Fly-in access for calving season |
The best route through Ngorongoro depends on where your safari begins and what you want to see. Some travellers drive in from Arusha via Tarangire or Lake Manyara, others arrive from the Serengeti, and some fly directly to Ndutu during calving season. Select a starting point below to see a suggested routing and the highlights you can include. These suggestions reflect how our planners usually design private itineraries. Your final route will balance driving time, wildlife opportunities and comfort, and it can be adjusted freely until it suits you perfectly. Every route includes your own private vehicle and guide.

View Package →You reach Ngorongoro Crater by road through Lodoare Gate, on the south-eastern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, after driving from Arusha via Karatu. From the rim, vehicles reach the crater floor on steep, one-way descent and ascent roads. The Seneto road on the western side is used for descending, the Lerai road on the southern side is used for climbing out, and the Lemala road in the north-east can be used in both directions. Your guide selects the route that best suits your lodge.
The main entrance is Lodoare Gate in the south-east, reached from Arusha and Karatu, where most safaris complete their entry formalities. Naabi Hill Gate, on the boundary with Serengeti National Park, is where travelers leave the conservation area and enter the Serengeti, or the reverse on the way back. Between them, a single main road crosses the highlands and plains past the turnoff to Olduvai Gorge. Your guide handles all permits at each gate as part of your private tailor-made safari.
Olduvai Gorge lies on the plains between Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, a short detour from the main road that links Lodoare Gate with Naabi Hill Gate. It is one of the world's most important sites for the study of human origins, with a small museum and a viewpoint overlooking the gorge. Nearby, the Shifting Sands is a crescent-shaped dune of volcanic ash that slowly moves across the plains. Many private safaris visit both on the way to the Serengeti.
Beyond the main crater, the Ngorongoro highlands include the Olmoti and Empakaai craters in the north of the conservation area. Olmoti is known for its grassy caldera and a waterfall, while Empakaai holds a deep crater lake that often attracts flamingos and offers spectacular rim walks with views toward Ol Doinyo Lengai. These areas are quieter and are best explored on foot with an armed NCAA ranger. Adding them to a private safari gives you a different perspective on the conservation area.
Yes, most of the Ndutu area lies within the south-western Ngorongoro Conservation Area, right next to the southern plains of Serengeti National Park. The two areas form one continuous landscape, and from about December to March the Great Migration herds gather here for calving season. Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek attract wildlife and birds, and the Ndutu airstrip supports fly-in safaris. NCAA rules and fees apply in Ndutu, so your guide plans routes and permits carefully for your private safari.
