Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Kilimanjaro National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Kilimanjaro National Park photos capture the journey from lush rainforest to the snow-capped summit of Africa's highest mountain: misty forest trails, camps above the clouds, giant groundsels, glacier views and the famous Uhuru Peak signpost at 5,895 meters. Browse our gallery for a feel of the routes, campsites and landscapes you can experience on a private guided climb or day hike. For your own photos, sunrise on summit day and the late-afternoon light above the clouds at high camps offer the most dramatic scenes on the mountain.

Simple ways to bring home better photos.
Store batteries and your phone in an inside pocket at night, especially on summit night when cold drains them fast.
High camps such as Barranco and Barafu often sit above the clouds at dawn and dusk.
Include a climber or tent in your frame to show the size of Kibo's glaciers and slopes.
Photograph rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and ice to tell the full story of your climb.
A compact camera or smartphone saves energy at altitude; keep it in your daypack.
Stay on trails for photos and never delay your guide's safety timings on summit day.

View Package →The best time to photograph Kilimanjaro is during the drier months of January to early March and June to October, when skies are often clearer and summit views more reliable. Early mornings usually give the sharpest views of Kibo before clouds build up, while late afternoons at high camps can bring glowing light above a sea of clouds. Summit day sunrise, often seen near Stella Point or Gilman's Point, is the most memorable photo moment of the entire climb, so keep your camera ready.
Keep your Kilimanjaro camera kit light, because every gram matters at altitude. A compact camera, a lightweight mirrorless body with a versatile zoom lens or a good smartphone works well. Bring several spare batteries and keep them warm in an inside pocket, since cold drains them quickly on summit night. Add memory cards, a lens cloth and a small dry bag for rain in the forest. Porters carry your main bag, but keep your camera in your daypack so it is always within easy reach.
Flying drones in Tanzania's national parks, including Kilimanjaro National Park, is restricted and requires official permits, which are rarely granted for recreational use. Drones can disturb wildlife, other climbers and rescue operations on the mountain, so you should not plan on flying one during your climb. Bringing a drone into Tanzania may also require prior authorization. Wide-angle lenses and panorama modes are excellent alternatives for capturing the vast views from the crater rim and high camps, without any permits or extra equipment.
Summit night photography is challenging because of darkness, cold and fatigue, so keep it simple. Carry a small camera or phone in an inside pocket to protect the battery, and save most shots for sunrise and the summit itself. Your guides will not rush your moment at the Uhuru Peak sign, but time at the top is short for safety reasons. Prioritize your well-being over photos, and ask your guide to take a few portraits of you beside the famous summit sign. Those images will become treasured souvenirs.
