Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Manyara National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Lake Manyara National Park photos capture a park of striking contrasts: the towering Rift Valley escarpment, shaded groundwater forest, shimmering soda lake, elephants among acacia trees, busy baboon troops and, at times, pink flamingos along the shore. Browse our gallery for a feel of the landscapes and wildlife you can experience on a private safari. For your own photography, the softest light comes early and late in the day, and a private vehicle with a pop-up roof lets you wait patiently for the perfect shot.

Lake Manyara Photography Tips

Simple ways to bring home better photos.

Expose for the Forest

Raise ISO in the shaded groundwater forest to keep monkeys and birds sharp.

Frame the Escarpment

Include the Rift Valley wall behind elephants and giraffes for a sense of place.

Watch the Shoreline

Use a long lens for pelicans, storks and flamingos when they gather along the lake edge.

Look Up in Trees

Scan acacia branches for resting lions and perched raptors, and be ready to shoot quickly.

Capture Baboon Life

Large baboon troops offer great behavior shots; wait for grooming or playful young.

Shoot From the Rim

Photograph sweeping lake views from escarpment viewpoints near the lodges at sunset.

Lake Manyara National Park Photos: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to photograph Lake Manyara?

The best time to photograph Lake Manyara depends on your subject. The dry season from about June to October offers clearer tracks, animals near water and good woodland visibility, while the green season brings lush scenery, dramatic skies and active birdlife. Flamingo numbers vary with water levels and food supply, so they are never guaranteed on any visit. In any month, the warmest light falls in the first and last hours of the day, so ask your guide to plan an early start or a late afternoon drive.

What camera gear should I bring to Lake Manyara?

A telephoto zoom reaching around 300 to 400 millimeters is the most useful lens for Lake Manyara wildlife and birds. Add a wider lens for escarpment views and forest scenes, plus spare batteries, extra memory cards and a dust blower. The groundwater forest can be dark, so a camera that handles higher ISO settings helps with monkeys and forest birds. A bean bag steadies long lenses on the vehicle frame, and modern smartphones work well for wide landscapes, escarpment views and colorful village scenes in Mto wa Mbu.

Can I fly a drone in Lake Manyara National Park?

Flying drones in Tanzania's national parks, including Lake Manyara, is restricted and requires official permits that are rarely granted for recreational use. Drones can disturb wildlife, especially birds and baboons, and other visitors, so you should not plan on flying one in the park. Bringing a drone into Tanzania may also require prior authorization. For elevated views, enjoy the escarpment viewpoints and lodges on the Rift Valley rim, which offer sweeping panoramas over the lake, the woodlands and the distant plains.

Is a private safari better for photography at Lake Manyara?

Yes, a private safari is ideal for photography at Lake Manyara because the vehicle, guide and timing are yours alone. You can stay at a sighting as long as you like, wait for an elephant to step into clear light, or search the woodlands patiently for tree-climbing lions. Our Land Cruisers have a pop-up roof and large windows, giving every passenger a clear shooting position. Your guide can also plan drives around the best light, the quietest areas and your favorite subjects.
