Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Eyasi first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, southwest of the Ngorongoro highlands, best known as the home of the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and Datoga pastoralists. Unlike a national park, it is a living landscape of villages, onion farms, acacia bush and salt flats, so visits focus on respectful cultural encounters, birdlife and dramatic escarpment scenery rather than classic game drives.
The essentials for planning a private, tailor-made visit.

View Package →No. Lake Eyasi is not a national park. It is a seasonal soda lake surrounded by villages, farms and bushland where Hadzabe and Datoga communities live. Visits are arranged with local guides and communities, so the focus is on cultural encounters, birdlife and scenery rather than game drives inside a protected park.
Lake Eyasi can cover up to about 1,050 square kilometres after good rains, but it is shallow and seasonal. In the dry season much of the basin dries out into salt flats, so its size changes noticeably through the year and from one year to the next.
The Hadzabe are one of Africa’s last hunter-gatherer peoples, living in small groups in the bush around Lake Eyasi. Visitors can join a guided early-morning walk to learn about tracking, bow-and-arrow hunting, fire-making and foraging, always led by a local guide who knows the community.
Most travellers spend a full day, often staying one night at a lodge or camp near the lake so they can join the Hadzabe at dawn. It combines easily with Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara or Tarangire on a private northern circuit itinerary.
