Ngorongoro Crater Safari in September

Local Expert

By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Written by our Arusha-based safari guides and private safari planners from first-hand experience in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater in September is dry, golden and warming up, with clear mornings, dusty plains and wildlife gathered around the springs and swamps. Crater floor days are usually about 22–26 °C, and rim nights are still cool but milder than in July and August, with less morning mist. Black rhino, lions, hyenas, buffalo and resident herds are easy to watch on the short grass, while the migration herds are usually far north at the Mara River. This guide covers weather, wildlife, crowds, costs, lodges and tips for planning a private tailor-made Ngorongoro Crater safari with your own guide and 4x4.

Quick answer

Yes. September is an excellent time to visit Ngorongoro Crater. The weather is dry and sunny, the short grass and scarce water make wildlife easy to find, and rim nights are milder than in midwinter. It is still high season, but slightly quieter than August once European holidays end.

Why Visit Ngorongoro Crater in September

Is September a good time to visit Ngorongoro Crater? For most travellers it is one of the best months of the year. The long dry season has turned the crater floor golden, water is limited to a few springs and swamps, and resident wildlife gathers where your guide knows to look. The weather is settled and warming, and the busiest August weeks are behind you. Here are six reasons we love September for a private safari with your own guide and 4x4. Each reason has its own tab, so you can compare them quickly.

Dry season

Animals Gather at the Springs and Swamps

By September the Ngorongoro crater floor is very dry, so buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and elephants return each day to Ngoitokitok Spring and the Mandusi and Gorigor swamps. Lions and hyenas follow the prey to the water. This concentration makes game drives productive, and your guide can plan a route around the main water sources. Mornings are usually best.

Short Grass for Black Rhino Spotting

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to look for the critically endangered black rhino. In September the grass is short and dry, so your guide can scan the open plains from a distance. Rhinos are shy and often far away, and sightings are never guaranteed, so binoculars are essential. Early starts help too.

Slightly Quieter Than August - Ngorongoro Crater in September

Slightly Quieter Than August

The European summer holidays usually end in early September, so the crater feels a little calmer than in August, especially later in the month. It remains high season, and vehicles still gather at rhino and lion sightings. Descending early and taking your picnic later than most help you enjoy quieter moments on the floor. Mid-month is usually calmer.

The crater’s dark-maned lions often rest near the swamps, waiting for prey that comes to drink. Hyenas are active in the cool early morning, so a first-light descent gives you the best chance of seeing them hunting.

Pair the Crater with the Northern Serengeti

In September the migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti for the Mara River crossings. The Ngorongoro Crater sits on the natural road route to the Serengeti, so one or two nights on the rim or in Karatu fit easily before or after the north. Tarangire is also at its dry-season best this month.

Ngorongoro Weather in September

Ngorongoro weather in September is usually dry, sunny and warming, as the long dry season reaches its final weeks. On the crater floor, at about 1,700–1,800 m, days are typically around 22–26 °C and feel warmer by the end of the month. The rim, at roughly 2,200–2,400 m, stays cool after dark, but nights are milder than in July and August, and morning mist is lighter. Rain is rare, and the floor is very dry and dusty. Pack a fleece for the rim, light layers for the floor and a buff against dust. Mornings on the rim feel crisp.

Ngorongoro and the Great Migration in September

Is the Great Migration near Ngorongoro Crater in September? No. The herds never enter the crater, and in September they are usually far to the north, in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende and the Lamai Triangle, where Mara River crossings typically continue. The Ndutu plains in the southern Ngorongoro Conservation Area are dry and quiet, with only resident wildlife. The crater, however, lies on the road route to the Serengeti, so combining the two is easy. Herd movements vary each year with the rains, so our guides follow the latest reports. Crossings are never guaranteed, so we plan flexibly.

Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife in September

Ngorongoro Crater wildlife is resident all year, because the steep walls and permanent water keep most animals on the floor. In September the dry season pulls buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and gazelles towards the springs and swamps, and lions and spotted hyenas follow. Look for black rhino on the open plains, old elephant bulls in Lerai Forest and hippos at Ngoitokitok Spring. Golden jackals, bat-eared foxes and servals are easier to spot in the short grass. A fun fact: there are no giraffes or impala on the crater floor. Sightings are never guaranteed, but your guide knows the favourite spots.

Ngorongoro Birds in September

Ngorongoro birds in September are mostly resident species, as Palearctic migrants from Europe and Asia usually arrive from around November. Over 500 species have been recorded in the conservation area. On the dry crater floor, kori bustards, ostriches, secretarybirds and grey crowned cranes are easy to see, and vultures gather wherever predators feed. Flamingo numbers at Lake Magadi vary with water levels, so they may be fewer as the lake shrinks. In the rim forests, look for sunbirds and Hartlaub’s turaco, and ask your guide about time at the swamps. Binoculars make smaller species much easier to enjoy.

Where to Go in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in September

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers about 8,292 km², and in September the best areas are those with water. Spend a full day on the crater floor, focusing on the springs, swamps and open plains, then add the forested rim, Olduvai Gorge or a highland crater hike. Karatu makes a comfortable base below the gate. Ndutu is dry and quiet this month, as the herds are far north. The tabs below rank the main areas for a September safari, best first. Your guide adjusts the order to suit your interests and lodge.

What to Expect on a Ngorongoro Crater Safari in September

A Ngorongoro Crater safari in September follows the rhythm of the late dry season: an early start on the cool rim, a dusty descent and warm hours on a golden crater floor. Wildlife stays close to the springs and swamps, vehicles gather at the best sightings, and conservation-area rules shape how long you stay below. Rim nights are cool but milder than in August. Below is what a typical September crater day, the roads, the weather, the rules, the sightings and the lodges feel like. Your guide handles the timings, so you can focus on the wildlife around you.

Is September the Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater?

Is September the best time to visit Ngorongoro Crater? For dry weather, easy wildlife viewing and a smooth combination with the northern Serengeti, it is one of the best months of the year. Animals gather near the springs and swamps, the short grass helps rhino spotting, and rim nights are milder than in July and August. Crowds ease a little after the August peak. If you prefer green landscapes and Ndutu calving, choose January or February; if you want the lowest rates and fewest vehicles, consider the green season in April or May. Your dates and budget decide.

ExcellentGood / mixedGreen season

September verdictExcellent: dry, sunny weather, wildlife concentrated at water, milder rim nights and slightly fewer visitors than August.

Ngorongoro Crater in September: Pros and Cons

Like every month, September in Ngorongoro Crater has its trade-offs. Its greatest strengths are dry, settled weather, wildlife concentrated around the springs and swamps, and easy combinations with the Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti. On the other hand, it is still high season, so rim lodges cost more and book early, popular sightings can be busy, and the floor is dusty with few flamingos. Weigh these points against your budget, dates and interests to decide whether September suits your private safari. We explain each point below in plain terms, so you know exactly what to expect.

Advantage

Wildlife Concentrated at Water

In September water on the crater floor is limited to a few springs and swamps, so animals gather there every day. Short, dry grass also opens up the plains, which helps your guide spot black rhino, lions and hyenas from a distance. Game drives are productive even within the time allowed on the floor. Mornings are especially rewarding.

  • Animals near water
  • Short, dry grass
  • Rhino easier to scan
  • Productive drives
Advantage

Dry, Sunny and Milder Nights

September brings reliable dry weather, sunny days and warming temperatures on the crater floor. Rim nights are still cool but milder than in July and August, and morning mist clears sooner, so views into the caldera are often good early. Dry roads make descents, ascents and highland hikes straightforward and comfortable. This makes September comfortable for most travellers.

  • Very little rain
  • Warming days
  • Milder rim nights
  • Less morning mist
Advantage

Perfect with the Northern Serengeti

The migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti in September, where Mara River crossings typically continue. The crater lies on the road route to the Serengeti, so it fits naturally before or after your northern nights. You enjoy resident Big Five in the crater and the migration in one private itinerary. Your guide links both smoothly.

  • Mara River nearby by air
  • Crater on the route
  • Big Five plus herds
  • One smooth itinerary
Consider

High-Season Rates and Early Booking

September is still high season, so rim lodges charge their higher rates and the best-located ones fill months ahead. If you book late, you may need to stay in Karatu, which adds a short drive each morning. Planning six to twelve months in advance gives you the widest choice of lodges and dates. Early enquiries are strongly advised.

  • Higher lodge rates
  • Rim lodges fill early
  • Book 6–12 months ahead
  • Karatu as a backup
Consider

Vehicles at Popular Sightings

Even with fewer visitors than August, the crater is busy, and vehicles gather at rhino and lion sightings and at the Ngoitokitok picnic site around midday. Conservation-area rules keep traffic moving, but some moments feel crowded. Our guides descend early, picnic later than most and head for quieter corners of the floor. Patience at busy sightings pays off.

  • Busy at times
  • Rules manage traffic
  • Descend early
  • Picnic later
Consider

Dust, Dry Plains and Fewer Flamingos

By September the crater floor is very dry, and wind can raise dust across the plains, especially in the afternoon. Lake Magadi shrinks, so flamingo numbers are often lower than in wetter months. The landscape is golden rather than green. A buff, sunglasses and a dust bag for your camera make a real difference. Dust is manageable.

  • Dusty afternoons
  • Lake Magadi shrinks
  • Golden, not green
  • Protect your camera

September is dry and warm, with slightly easier availability than July and August. Every private safari we design is matched to your budget and travel style. Ngorongoro Travel Tips for September

A little planning makes a Ngorongoro Crater safari in September far more rewarding. Because it is high season, the most important steps are to book rim lodges early, descend at first light and plan your picnic away from the midday rush. It also helps to protect yourself and your camera from dust, dress in layers for the cool rim and warm floor, and link the crater with the northern Serengeti. These tips come from our Arusha-based guides. Follow the tips below and you will spend less time waiting and more time watching wildlife.

Planning

Reserve Rim Lodges Early

Lodges on the Ngorongoro crater rim are among the first to fill for September, so booking six to twelve months ahead gives you the best choice. If your dates are flexible, the second half of the month is often a little quieter. Securing northern Serengeti camps and flights at the same time keeps planning simple.

  • Book 6–12 months ahead
  • Secure rim lodges
  • Late September is quieter
  • Book Serengeti camps too
Crater day

Be at the Descent Road at Opening

Descents usually start early in the morning, and the first hours on the crater floor are the quietest and coolest. Predators are active, the light is soft and fewer vehicles are below. Staying on the rim the night before makes an early start easy, and a packed breakfast lets you eat on the floor. Bring a warm layer.

  • Descend at opening
  • Stay on the rim
  • Packed breakfast
  • Cool, quiet mornings
Lunch

Picnic Later Than Most

Most vehicles head to Ngoitokitok Spring or Lerai around midday, so the picnic sites can be busy. We often eat a little later, when the crowds move on, or choose the quieter site. Keep food inside the vehicle until you are seated, as black kites are bold, and take all litter with you. Patience here pays off.

  • Avoid the midday rush
  • Choose the quieter site
  • Watch for black kites
  • Take litter with you
Comfort

Prepare for Dust and Strong Sun

By September the crater floor is very dry, and afternoon wind can blow dust across the plains and into the vehicle. Pack a buff or scarf, sunglasses and eye drops, and keep cameras in a dust-proof bag. The sun is strong at altitude, so wear a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen all day. Close windows when dust rises.

  • Buff or scarf
  • Sunglasses and eye drops
  • Dust-proof camera bag
  • Hat and sunscreen
Clothing

Dress for a Cool Rim and Warm Floor

September rim nights and mornings are cool, though milder than in August, while the crater floor warms to about 22–26 °C by midday. Layers work best: a fleece or soft jacket for the rim and the early descent, then a light shirt for the floor. Many rim lodges have fireplaces for chilly evenings. Dress in easy layers.

  • Fleece for the rim
  • Light layers below
  • Warm evening clothes
  • Comfortable closed shoes
Logistics

Combine the Crater with the Northern Serengeti

Because the migration herds are usually far north in September, plan your crater day on the way to or from the Serengeti. Many travellers drive through the crater highlands to the central Serengeti, then fly from a Serengeti airstrip to the north. Your guide can meet you there, keeping your private safari seamless. We help sequence the route.

  • Crater on the route
  • Drive one way
  • Fly north to save time

What to Pack for Ngorongoro Crater in September

What should you pack for Ngorongoro Crater in September? Think dry, dusty and sunny on the floor, with cool evenings and mornings on the rim. Light, neutral layers keep you comfortable from the rim to the warm crater floor, and a fleece or soft jacket is essential after dark. Dust is the main challenge, so bring a buff, sunglasses and protection for your camera. Strong sun at altitude calls for a wide-brimmed hat and high-factor sunscreen. Binoculars help with distant rhino, and our full packing list covers every item in detail. Pack light, soft bags for easy loading.

  • Light, neutral-coloured clothing
  • Warm fleece or soft jacket
  • Warm layer for rim evenings
  • Wide-brimmed sun hat
  • High-factor sunscreen and lip balm
  • Sunglasses and eye drops
  • Buff or scarf against dust
  • Binoculars for every passenger
  • Camera with dust-proof bag
  • Spare batteries and memory cards
  • Insect repellent
  • Comfortable closed shoes

Events and Holidays in September

There are no fixed national public holidays in Tanzania in September, so the month’s big events are natural ones. The end of the European summer school holidays in early September means visitor numbers at the crater begin to ease after August. Dry-season wildlife gathers around the springs and swamps, and Mara River crossings typically continue in the northern Serengeti. Religious holidays such as Maulid follow the lunar calendar and may fall in some years, so check your travel dates. Late in the month, the first signs of the short rains are still weeks away. Your guide adjusts plans accordingly.

How to Get to Ngorongoro Crater in September

How do you get to Ngorongoro Crater in September? Most travellers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, known as JRO, and spend a night in Arusha. From there, your guide drives you via Mto wa Mbu and Karatu to Lodoare Gate, a journey of roughly 3–4 hours and about 180 km on good roads. Alternatively, a short flight from Arusha Airport to the Lake Manyara airstrip saves time, and your guide meets you there. In September dry roads make the drive smooth, and the crater usually connects onward to the Serengeti. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Arusha.

Ngorongoro Health and Safety in September

Health and safety on a Ngorongoro Crater safari in September are straightforward with a few precautions. Our guides are first-aid trained, and travel insurance should include evacuation. Carry any personal medication in your day bag, not your luggage.
