By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Ruaha National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Ruaha is a superb destination for wildlife photography, with elephants framed by giant baobabs, lions on dry sand rivers and dramatic river scenes along the Great Ruaha. Few vehicles means you can often spend unhurried time at a sighting, and a private safari lets you position for the best light without compromise.

Ruaha Photography Tips

Simple ways to come home with better pictures.

Frame with baobabs

Ruaha’s giant baobabs make iconic backdrops for elephants.

Work the sand rivers

Predators often rest and hunt along dry sand riverbeds.

Use a beanbag

Steady long lenses on the vehicle for sharper shots.

Shoot at golden hour

Early and late light is warm and the heat haze is low.

Be patient

Few vehicles means you can wait for the moment at sightings.

Pack for dust

Keep cameras covered on dusty dry-season drives.

Ruaha National Park Photos: Frequently Asked Questions

What can I photograph in Ruaha?

Highlights include elephants among baobabs, lions, wild dogs, kudu and the Great Ruaha River. Our guides know where and when the light is best, and on a private safari you can take as long as you need at each sighting or viewpoint without worrying about other travellers in the vehicle.

What is the best time for photography in Ruaha?

The dry season from June to October is best for photography, as wildlife concentrates along the river and vegetation thins out. Early morning and late afternoon give the warmest light. The green season brings lush scenery, dramatic skies and excellent bird photography.

What camera gear should I bring?

A camera with a zoom lens of around 100–400 mm covers most situations, with a wider lens for landscapes. Bring spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a dust-proof bag. A beanbag helps steady long lenses in the vehicle. Charging is usually available at lodges and camps, but check with us for remote locations.

Can I photograph local people?

Always ask first, and accept politely if someone prefers not to be photographed. Your guide can help with introductions and explain what is welcome. Avoid photographing children without a parent’s clear consent, and never photograph airports, government buildings or officials.
