Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Eyasi first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Lake Eyasi lies in a long Rift Valley basin southwest of Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands. Most visits are based around the village of Mang’ola, with Hadzabe camps in the surrounding bush, Datoga homesteads on the plains and the lakeshore and salt flats to the south. The steep Eyasi Escarpment frames the basin, and the gravel road from Karatu is the main access route.
The main areas visitors explore. Numbers on the map match the list.
How travellers usually arrive and enter.
| Access point | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Karatu | Road (main route) | Gravel road from Karatu down to Mang’ola, usually 1.5–2 hours |
| Ngorongoro highlands | Road | Often combined with a crater visit on the same itinerary |
| Arusha | Road | A full day’s drive via Mto wa Mbu and Karatu |
| Lake Manyara airstrip | Air + road | Fly in, then continue by private 4x4 vehicle |

From Karatu, the drive down to Mang’ola and the lake usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours on a gravel road, depending on conditions. Many travellers stay at a lodge near Mang’ola so they can join the Hadzabe early the next morning.
Yes. Lake Eyasi is a few hours’ drive from the Ngorongoro Crater rim via Karatu, so the two are often combined. A common plan is to visit Lake Eyasi before or after a crater day on a private northern circuit safari.
A 4x4 safari vehicle is strongly recommended. The final stretch is unpaved and can be dusty or muddy depending on the season. Our private safaris use well-maintained 4x4 vehicles with experienced driver-guides who know the area well.
