Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Mikumi National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Mikumi National Park lies in south-central Tanzania, between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. The paved highway crosses the park, and most game viewing takes place on the open Mkata floodplain north of the road, with hippo pools, waterholes and grassland plains. The park borders other protected areas to the south and sits close to the Udzungwa Mountains.

Mikumi National Park Map: Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Mikumi National Park?

Mikumi is in south-central Tanzania, on the highway between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. It sits north of the Udzungwa Mountains and close to Nyerere National Park, making it a convenient stop on the southern safari circuit.

Where is the best game viewing in Mikumi?

The Mkata floodplain north of the highway offers the best game viewing, with open plains, waterholes and hippo pools. Our guides plan routes around recent sightings and the best times of day.

Does a road go through Mikumi?

Yes. The main paved highway between Dar es Salaam and Iringa crosses the park, so wildlife can sometimes be seen from the road. Speed limits apply, and game drives take place on park tracks away from the highway.

Can I combine Mikumi with Udzungwa?

Yes. The Udzungwa Mountains are a short drive from Mikumi, so many travellers combine a Mikumi game drive with a hike to the Sanje waterfalls in Udzungwa on the same trip.
