Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Arusha National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Arusha National Park photos capture an unusually varied landscape: the snowless cone of Mount Meru, the forested bowl of Ngurdoto Crater, pink flamingos on the Momella Lakes, black-and-white colobus monkeys in the trees and giraffes against a backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Browse our gallery for a feel of the scenery and wildlife you can enjoy on a private day safari or Meru climb. For your own photography, early mornings bring the clearest mountain views, and a private vehicle with a pop-up roof lets you wait patiently for the right moment.

Simple ways to bring home better photos.
Plan sunrise drives for the best chance of cloud-free views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Black-and-white fur is tricky; protect the white highlights and shoot from shade-side angles in the forest.
Use a long lens at the lakeshore to isolate flamingos and catch reflections on calm water.
A wide lens captures the full crater bowl, especially when morning mist lifts from the forest.
Take one zoom lens and a dry bag on Small Momella Lake to stay steady and safe.
Keep your distance on walking safaris and follow your armed ranger's instructions at all times.

View Package →The best time to photograph Arusha National Park is during the drier months, roughly June to October and again around December to February, when skies are clearer and forest tracks are easier. Early morning is the most rewarding time of day, because Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro are more often free of cloud and the light on the Momella Lakes is soft. The green season brings lush forest, dramatic skies and fewer vehicles, though mountain views can be hidden by cloud for longer.
Yes, on clear days you can photograph Mount Kilimanjaro from Arusha National Park, especially from the Momella Lakes area and from higher points on Mount Meru. Clouds often build up as the day warms, so the best chances usually come at sunrise and in the early morning. A telephoto lens helps you frame Kibo's snow-capped summit above the plains, while a wider lens lets you include grazing giraffes, lakes or flamingos in the foreground for a classic northern Tanzania image.
A camera body with a telephoto zoom lens reaching around 300 to 400 millimeters is ideal for colobus monkeys, birds and flamingos, while a wider lens suits crater views, forest scenes and mountain landscapes. Because forest light can be dim, a lens with a wide aperture or a camera that handles higher ISO settings is helpful. Bring spare batteries, memory cards, a bean bag for the vehicle and a dry bag if you plan to canoe on Small Momella Lake.
Flying drones in Tanzania's national parks is restricted and requires official permits, which are rarely granted for recreational use. Drones can disturb wildlife, including nesting birds and primates, as well as other visitors, so you should not plan on flying one in Arusha National Park. Bringing a drone into Tanzania may also require prior authorization. For elevated perspectives without a drone, the Ngurdoto Crater rim viewpoints and the slopes of Mount Meru offer superb, sweeping views without any special equipment or permits.
