From March to May, the long rains arrive and the herds begin moving north-west from the southern plains toward the central Serengeti. The landscape turns lush and green, bird life is excellent and fewer vehicles are in the parks. Afternoon showers are common, and some roads become muddy, so an experienced private guide is valuable. Many camps offer lower green season rates. Herd movements are especially unpredictable in these months because they depend closely on where rain falls and fresh grass grows.

Around late May to July, the Great Migration typically moves through the central Serengeti into the Western Corridor and Grumeti area. Here the herds must cross the Grumeti River, where large crocodiles wait in the pools, creating the first dramatic crossings of the year. The rutting season also brings energetic displays from male wildebeest. This period combines dry, pleasant weather with fewer visitors than the northern Serengeti peak, making it an excellent choice for a private migration safari with flexible game drives.

From July to October, the herds reach the northern Serengeti around Kogatende, where the famous Mara River crossings take place. Activity usually peaks in August and September, as wildebeest and zebras gather on the riverbanks before plunging across past waiting crocodiles. In November, the short rains begin and the herds leave the northern Serengeti, heading south through the eastern and central Serengeti toward the fresh grasslands around Ndutu.
