Tanzania Safari in September

Local Expert

By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Written by our Arusha-based guides and private safari planners from first-hand experience in Tanzania.

A Tanzania safari in September falls late in the long dry season, when the bush is golden, water is scarce and wildlife concentrates around rivers and swamps. Days are dry, sunny and warming after the cool midyear months. The Great Migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti, where Mara River crossings continue at their peak, yet visitor numbers ease once school holidays end. Tarangire’s elephant herds are at their largest, Kilimanjaro is in a prime climbing window and Zanzibar is dry and pleasant. This guide covers weather, wildlife, costs, crowds, packages and lodges for a private tailor-made safari.

Quick answer

Yes. September is one of the best months for a Tanzania safari. The migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti for continued Mara River crossings, the weather is dry and sunny, wildlife gathers at water, and crowds are often lighter than in August, especially later in the month.

Why Visit Tanzania Safari in September

September combines the best of the dry season with a little more breathing space. Grass is short, many trees are bare and animals gather around the remaining water, so game viewing across the northern circuit is easy and rewarding. The migration herds are usually in the far north of the Serengeti, where Mara River crossings continue at their peak. After the August holidays, lodges and parks often feel calmer, especially later in the month. Here are six reasons why September is an excellent choice for a private tailor-made safari.

Mara River Crossings Continue - Tanzania safari in September
Great Migration

Mara River Crossings Continue

In September the wildebeest and zebra herds are usually still in the northern Serengeti, crossing the Mara River as they move between grazing areas on both banks. August and September are the peak crossing months. A private guide can wait patiently at the river, reading the herds’ behaviour, rather than hurrying away to keep to a fixed timetable.

Peak Wildlife, Fewer Holidaymakers

European and North American school holidays usually end by early September, so demand eases compared with August. The northern parks are still popular, but you are more likely to enjoy a sighting with only a few vehicles nearby, particularly in the second half of the month. Camps can also be slightly easier to book than mid-August dates.

Late in the dry season, the Tarangire River is one of the few reliable water sources in the region, so elephant herds gather in remarkable numbers. Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and eland join them, and lions and leopards follow the prey. Bare baobabs against clear skies make September one of the most photogenic months in the park.

Excellent Predator Viewing

Thin vegetation and concentrated prey make September excellent for lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. In the north, predators wait near the herds and at river crossings, while leopards are easier to find along the Seronera valley in the central Serengeti. Ngorongoro Crater adds black rhino, completing the Big Five for many guests on a northern circuit trip.

Weather & Climate during a Tanzania Safari in September

September is late in the long dry season in northern Tanzania. Expect clear, sunny days in the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, typically around 25–29 °C, with fresh mornings that warm quickly. Rain is very rare, humidity is low and the plains are golden, dry and often dusty. Temperatures rise gradually through the month after the cooler midyear period. The Ngorongoro highlands remain cool, and nights on the crater rim are cold, so warm layers are still needed. Zanzibar is dry, sunny and pleasantly warm, with breezes along the coast. Pack light layers and a fleece. Sunglasses help.

Wildlife and Animals

September wildlife viewing is superb across northern Tanzania. The Great Migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti, crossing the Mara River near Kogatende, where crocodiles lie in wait and lions and hyenas follow closely. In Tarangire, elephant herds reach their largest numbers along the river, joined by buffalo, giraffe and eland. Ngorongoro Crater offers dependable sightings of black rhino, lions and hyenas. Leopards are easier to spot in the bare trees around Seronera, and cheetahs hunt on the open plains. With little water elsewhere, most animals stay close to rivers, springs and swamps, making sightings frequent. Binoculars help.

Tanzania Safari in September Birds

September birding is good rather than peak, because the Palearctic migrants from Europe and Asia usually arrive only from around November. Tanzania’s resident birdlife is still rich, and the dry conditions concentrate birds around rivers, swamps and lakes, where they are easier to find. Raptors stand out over the bare plains, and vultures gather wherever predators feed. Lake Manyara and the soda lakes can hold flamingos and pelicans, while Tarangire is excellent for lovebirds, hornbills and barbets. Ask your private guide to plan a slow morning focused on birds, and bring good binoculars for everyone. Patience brings rewarding sightings.

Where to go during a Tanzania Safari in September

Where you go in September shapes the whole trip. The herds are usually in the far north of the Serengeti, so the best itineraries spend several nights near Kogatende and the Mara River, then add central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. Late in the dry season every northern park is rewarding, and the remote southern parks are also at their best. Distances are long, so flights are worth considering. Choose the areas below to match your interests; each includes the main reasons to go and the ideal number of nights.

Kogatende and the Mara River - Tanzania safari in September
Top pick

Kogatende and the Mara River

The northern Serengeti around Kogatende is the heart of the action in September. Herds gather on both banks of the Mara River, and crossings can happen at any time of day. The area is remote and wild, so a light-aircraft flight and three or four nights give you the best chance of seeing at least one crossing.

What to expect on a Tanzania Safari in September

Knowing what to expect helps you enjoy a September safari to the full. It is still high season, but once school holidays end, demand eases and many parks feel calmer than in August. The weather is dry and sunny, with fresh mornings, warm afternoons, golden landscapes and dusty tracks. Wildlife is concentrated near water, and the migration is usually far north, which means long journeys or flights. Here is what typical September safari days feel like, from early starts and river crossings to crowds, transfers, comfort and dust. Use these notes to set realistic expectations. Each covers practical details.

Tanzania Safari in September crowds

September is high season, but it is usually less crowded than August. The first week can still be busy as summer holidays finish, then numbers ease, and late September is often noticeably calmer. The Mara River crossing points and Ngorongoro Crater still attract the most vehicles, because they are the headline attractions, and Seronera can be busy around big-cat sightings. Tarangire is popular yet spacious, while Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park feel quiet. A private vehicle, early starts, full-day drives and a guide who knows the side tracks help you enjoy peaceful sightings throughout the month. Patience helps.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari in September

Within September, conditions stay dry and excellent, so timing depends mainly on crowds and the herds. The first week still overlaps with the end of some school holidays, so demand is high. From mid-month the northern parks usually feel calmer while Mara River crossings continue, making the second half of September a sweet spot for many travellers. Herd movements vary each year, so several nights in the north are wise. For Kilimanjaro, aim for a summit date around full moon for brighter night trekking. Zanzibar is dry and sunny all month, so any week suits a beach finish.

Tanzania Safari in September: Pros and cons

Every month has trade-offs, and September is no exception. It offers continued Mara River crossings, superb late dry-season wildlife viewing, reliable sunny weather and excellent conditions for Kilimanjaro or a Zanzibar beach finish, often with fewer visitors than August. On the other hand, it is still high season, so accommodation in the north costs more and fills early, and the dry landscape is dusty. Weighing these points against your budget, dates and interests helps you decide whether September suits your private tailor-made safari. The six points below summarise the main pros and cons. Each con includes a practical fix.

Events during a Tanzania Safari in September

September has no fixed national public holidays in Tanzania, so offices, shops and safari logistics run normally throughout the month. Religious holidays such as Eid and the Prophet’s Birthday follow the lunar calendar, so their dates move each year and should be checked for your travel dates. The main events are natural. Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti usually continue at their peak, elephant numbers in Tarangire build as water becomes scarce, and many European and North American school holidays end early in the month, easing demand. The dry season continues until the short rains, usually from November.

Safari Prices & Costs

September is high season in northern Tanzania, so understanding what shapes the cost of your private safari helps you plan wisely. The biggest factors are the lodges or camps you choose, how many nights you spend in the northern Serengeti, whether you drive or fly, park and conservation fees, and the size of your party. Rates change by year and by property, so we quote each tailor-made itinerary individually rather than publishing fixed prices. The points below explain how each element affects your total budget. Travel Tips

A little preparation makes a September safari easier and more rewarding. Because this is still high season, the most important step is booking early, especially for northern Serengeti camps, light-aircraft flights and Kilimanjaro. It also helps to choose your week wisely, allow enough nights near the Mara River, pack for fresh mornings and warm afternoons, protect your camera from dust and organise visas and health precautions in advance. These practical tips come from our Arusha-based guides and planners, who run private safaris throughout the season. Use them alongside the rest of this guide when planning.

Aim for Mid to Late September - Tanzania safari in September
Planning

Aim for Mid to Late September

If your dates are flexible, travelling from mid-September often gives you the same dry-season wildlife and crossing activity as August with fewer visitors. The first week can still be busy with the last of the summer holidays. Booking nine to twelve months ahead secures the best northern camps, flights and guides for any week. Flights also sell out quickly.

Spend Enough Nights in the North - Tanzania safari in September
Itinerary

Spend Enough Nights in the North

Plan at least three nights in the northern Serengeti so you can wait for crossings and follow the herds between riverbanks. One night is rarely enough. Full-day drives with picnic lunches let you stay at the river, and a flexible plan lets your guide react quickly when the herds start gathering. Patience is always rewarded.

Dress for Fresh Mornings and Warm Days

Bring light, breathable clothing for warm afternoons, plus a fleece or light jacket for early drives and cold nights on the Ngorongoro rim. A scarf or buff helps with dust. Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are essential, as the dry-season sun is strong. Many lodges offer laundry, so you can pack light. Avoid bright white clothing.

Most visitors need a Tanzanian visa, which can be applied for online through the official immigration e-visa system before travel. Protect Your Gear from Dust

Late dry-season tracks are dusty, so keep cameras in a sealed bag between sightings, change lenses carefully and bring a blower and cleaning cloth. A beanbag steadies long lenses for crossing action. Contact lens wearers may prefer glasses, and lip balm and moisturiser help in the dry air. Pack spare batteries and memory cards. Early light is warmest.

Plan Health Precautions Early - Tanzania safari in September
Wellbeing

Plan Health Precautions Early

Visit a travel clinic several weeks before departure to discuss malaria prevention and recommended vaccines. Mosquitoes are fewer in the dry season, but malaria is still present, so use repellent in the evenings. Drink plenty of water in the warm, dry air, carry personal medication in hand luggage and take insurance with medical evacuation cover.

What to Bring

Packing for a September safari means preparing for fresh mornings, warm sunny afternoons and dusty tracks. Choose light, breathable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive or beige, and avoid bright white and dark blue or black in tsetse areas. Add a fleece or light jacket for early drives and cold nights on the Ngorongoro rim, plus a scarf or buff for dust. If you are flying in light aircraft, use a soft duffel bag and respect the baggage weight limit. Climbers need specialist cold-weather gear for summit night, and beach extensions call for swimwear. Binoculars are essential.

  • Neutral, breathable clothing
  • Fleece or light jacket
  • Scarf or buff for dust
  • Wide-brim hat & sunglasses
  • High-factor sunscreen
  • Lip balm & moisturiser
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars
  • Camera & dust bag
  • Soft duffel bag
  • Personal medication
  • Reusable water bottle

How to get there

Most September safaris begin at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which lies between Moshi and Arusha and receives international flights via major hubs in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Your guide meets you on arrival and transfers you to Arusha, the gateway to the northern parks. From Arusha you can drive through Tarangire and the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti, or fly from Arusha Airport to Kogatende and other airstrips. Zanzibar is reached by a short domestic flight. Some travellers arrive via Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar and connect north by air. Your planner arranges every transfer. Flights save time.

  1. Fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO)International arrival near Arusha and Moshi
  2. Private transfer to ArushaMeet-and-greet with your guide; overnight in Arusha
  3. Drive or fly northRoad via Ngorongoro, or light aircraft to Kogatende
  4. Optional flight to ZanzibarShort domestic flight for a beach extension

Malaria & safety

Malaria is present in safari areas and on Zanzibar all year. September is dry, so mosquitoes are fewer than in the rains, but prevention still matters. Speak to a travel clinic about suitable antimalarial medication, use repellent, wear long sleeves in the evening and sleep under nets where provided. Tanzania is a welcoming country and private safaris are well organised, but sensible precautions apply. Follow your guide’s instructions around wildlife, stay inside the vehicle unless told otherwise, keep valuables secure in towns, and drink only bottled or filtered water. Comprehensive insurance with evacuation cover is strongly recommended. Stay sun-safe.

Health
  • Ask a travel clinic about antimalarials
  • Use repellent and long sleeves at dusk
  • Drink plenty of bottled or filtered water
  • Carry yellow fever proof if required
Safety
  • Follow your guide around wildlife
  • Keep distance at river crossings
  • Keep valuables secure in towns
  • Get insurance with evacuation cover
