Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Katavi National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Katavi is a remarkable destination for wildlife photography, especially in the late dry season when hippos crowd the Katuma River pools and buffalo herds stretch across the floodplains. With very few vehicles, you can take your time at sightings and work with the light on a private safari.

Katavi National Park Photos: Frequently Asked Questions

What can I photograph in Katavi?

Highlights include crowded hippo pools, huge buffalo herds, lions and wide floodplains. Our guides know where and when the light is best, and on a private safari you can take as long as you need at each sighting or viewpoint without worrying about other travellers in the vehicle.

What is the best time for photography in Katavi?

The late dry season from about August to October is best, when wildlife concentrates around the remaining water. Early morning and late afternoon give warm light and less heat haze. The green season is lush but many areas become hard to access.

What camera gear should I bring?

A camera with a zoom lens of around 100–400 mm covers most situations, with a wider lens for landscapes. Bring spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a dust-proof bag. A beanbag helps steady long lenses in the vehicle. Charging is usually available at lodges and camps, but check with us for remote locations.

Can I photograph local people?

Always ask first, and accept politely if someone prefers not to be photographed. Your guide can help with introductions and explain what is welcome. Avoid photographing children without a parent’s clear consent, and never photograph airports, government buildings or officials.
