Katavi National Park Facts: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Katavi National Park known for?

Katavi is known for spectacular dry-season wildlife concentrations: hundreds of hippos packed into shrinking pools, buffalo herds of a thousand or more, and lions that follow them. It is also one of Tanzania’s most remote and least-visited parks, so sightings often happen without other vehicles around.

How big is Katavi National Park?

Katavi covers about 4,471 square kilometres of miombo woodland, floodplains and seasonal lakes. Most game viewing focuses on the Katuma River and the Lake Katavi and Lake Chada floodplains, where water and wildlife concentrate in the dry season.

When is the best time to visit Katavi?

The dry season from about June to October is best, peaking in August to October when water is scarce and wildlife gathers around the remaining pools. In the rains, many areas become hard to reach and some camps close.

How long should I stay in Katavi?

Three to four nights is ideal to make the long journey worthwhile and explore different areas of the floodplains. Many travellers combine Katavi with chimpanzee trekking in Mahale Mountains on a western Tanzania fly-in safari.
