Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Mahale Mountains National Park first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.
Mahale Mountains National Park covers about 1,600 square kilometres of forested mountains rising from the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika in remote western Tanzania. Established in 1985, it is one of the best places in Africa to track wild chimpanzees on foot. With no roads, visitors arrive by light aircraft and boat, making Mahale one of the most remote and memorable safari experiences in the country.
The essentials for planning a private, tailor-made visit.
Every traveler experiences Mahale differently. Choose the safari style that suits you, and Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris will tailor a private itinerary around your dates, budget and interests.

Mahale is known for wild chimpanzees living in forested mountains on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Guided treks take visitors to spend time with the chimps in their natural habitat, and the park also offers beautiful beaches, clear lake water and dramatic mountain scenery.
Mahale is very remote. There are no roads into the park, so visitors usually fly by light aircraft to an airstrip nearby and continue by boat along Lake Tanganyika. This remoteness keeps visitor numbers low and the experience peaceful.
Three to four nights is ideal. Chimpanzee sightings are never guaranteed on a single day, so several days of trekking give you the best chance of a rewarding encounter, plus time to enjoy the lake and forest.
Yes. Mahale is often combined with Katavi National Park by light aircraft, creating a western Tanzania adventure. Flights also connect with Arusha and the northern circuit for longer private itineraries.
