Local Expert

By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Natron first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Lake Natron is a dream for landscape and wildlife photographers, with red-tinted soda flats, vast flocks of flamingos, the cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai and lush waterfalls in a desert gorge. The heat and glare are intense, so planning around the light and protecting your gear from dust and alkaline spray makes a big difference.

Lake Natron Photography Tips

Simple ways to come home with better pictures.

Shoot in golden hour

Soft early and late light brings out the reds and pinks of the lake.

Bring a long lens

A 300 mm or longer lens captures flamingos without disturbing them.

Use a polarising filter

Cut glare from the water and salt crust for richer colours.

Keep a distance

Stay on firm ground and never approach nesting flamingos.

Protect from dust

Fine volcanic dust is everywhere, so seal cameras between shots.

Frame the volcano

Use Ol Doinyo Lengai as a dramatic backdrop to the flats.

Lake Natron Photos: Frequently Asked Questions

What can I photograph in Lake Natron?

Highlights include flamingos, the red soda flats, Ol Doinyo Lengai and the Ngare Sero waterfalls. Our guides know where and when the light is best, and on a private safari you can take as long as you need at each sighting or viewpoint without worrying about other travellers in the vehicle.

What is the best time for photography in Lake Natron?

Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light, the strongest colours on the soda flats and the most comfortable temperatures. Flamingo numbers vary with water levels and breeding activity, so ask us about recent conditions. Midday is best spent in the shaded Ngare Sero gorge.

What camera gear should I bring?

A camera with a zoom lens of around 100–400 mm covers most situations, with a wider lens for landscapes. Bring spare batteries, plenty of memory cards and a dust-proof bag. A beanbag helps steady long lenses in the vehicle. Charging is usually available at lodges and camps, but check with us for remote locations.

Can I photograph local people?

Always ask first, and accept politely if someone prefers not to be photographed. Your guide can help with introductions and explain what is welcome. Avoid photographing children without a parent’s clear consent, and never photograph airports, government buildings or officials.
