By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Natron first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Lake Natron stretches north towards the Kenyan border along the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Most visits are based near the southern shore around the village of Engaresero, where lodges and camps sit between the flamingo flats, the Ngare Sero gorge and the slopes of Ol Doinyo Lengai. The main road arrives from Mto wa Mbu in the south, and a rougher track continues west towards the northern Serengeti.

Lake Natron Map: Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Lake Natron on the map?

Lake Natron lies in the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. It sits north of Mto wa Mbu and Lake Manyara and east of the northern Serengeti, with the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai rising just south of the lake.

How far is Lake Natron from Arusha?

Lake Natron is roughly 200 kilometres from Arusha. The drive usually takes three to four hours or more, starting on tarmac to Mto wa Mbu before continuing on an unpaved Rift Valley track. A 4x4 vehicle and an experienced driver-guide are essential.

Can I drive from Lake Natron to the Serengeti?

Yes. A rough but scenic track links Lake Natron with the northern Serengeti, usually taking most of a day. It avoids backtracking through Ngorongoro and passes remote Maasai areas and Rift Valley scenery, so it is a popular choice for adventurous private itineraries.

Where do visitors stay at Lake Natron?

Most lodges and camps are near the southern shore around Engaresero, close to the flamingo flats, the Ngare Sero waterfalls and the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai. This keeps walking and trekking times short and makes early starts easier.
