Lake Natron Facts

Local Expert

By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Our Arusha-based guides and safari planners know Lake Natron first-hand, and write this guide from experience on the ground.

Lake Natron is a shallow, highly alkaline soda lake in the Great Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. Its caustic, mineral-rich water and red algae create one of Africa’s most otherworldly landscapes, and it is the most important breeding ground for Lesser Flamingos in East Africa. Nearby rise the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai and the Ngare Sero waterfalls, making Natron a remote adventure destination.

Lake Natron Facts: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lake Natron a national park?

No. Lake Natron is not a national park. It lies in a remote area managed with local district and village authorities, where Maasai communities live and graze livestock. Visits are arranged with local guides, focusing on flamingos, the Ngare Sero waterfalls and the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano rather than classic game drives.

Why is Lake Natron red?

Lake Natron’s red and pink colours come from salt-loving microorganisms and algae that thrive in its warm, highly alkaline water. As water evaporates and minerals concentrate, these organisms bloom, staining the shallows and salt crusts in shades that look striking from the shore and from the air.

Can you swim in Lake Natron?

No. The water is highly alkaline, up to about pH 10.5, and can irritate or burn skin and eyes. Instead, visitors swim in the cool, clear pools below the Ngare Sero waterfalls, a guided walk from the lakeshore, which offer a refreshing contrast to the caustic lake.

How many days do I need at Lake Natron?

Most travellers spend one to three days. One full day covers the flamingo flats and the Ngare Sero waterfalls, while fit travellers add a night to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai. Natron fits well as a scenic stop between the northern Serengeti and Arusha on a private itinerary.
