Tanzania Safari in March

Local Expert

By the Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris team
Written by our Arusha-based guides and private safari planners from first-hand experience in Tanzania.

A Tanzania safari in March marks the turning point between the short dry spell and the long rains, which usually arrive in the second half of the month. The Great Migration herds are still on the green plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, now with strong young calves, and predators remain close by. Early March is often dry and bright, later weeks bring heavier afternoon storms, and visitor numbers fall as some lodges begin lower green-season rates. This guide covers March weather, wildlife, crowds, costs, packages and lodges to help you plan a private tailor-made safari with confidence.

Quick answer

Yes. March is a good month for a Tanzania safari, especially early in the month. The migration herds and their young calves usually remain in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, predators are active and crowds are lighter, although the long rains typically begin in the second half of March.

Why Visit Tanzania Safari in March

March offers a rewarding balance of wildlife, scenery and value. The migration herds usually stay on the southern plains while the grass is green, so their young calves, now growing stronger, are easy to find alongside the predators that follow them. Landscapes are lush, skies are dramatic, and migrant birds are still present. Because the long rains are approaching, visitor numbers fall and some lodges introduce lower green-season rates. For flexible travellers, March is a smart choice for a private tailor-made safari with fewer vehicles and plenty of wildlife.

Herds and Growing Calves in the South

In March the wildebeest and zebra herds usually remain on the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti. The calves born in February are now stronger and running with their mothers, and late births still occur. Your private guide can spend whole days with the herds, which are often spread widely across the green plains.

Plenty of young prey keeps lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals active around the herds through March. The open plains still make hunts relatively easy to follow, and cheetah families are a regular sight. With fewer vehicles than in February, sightings often feel more private and relaxed, so you can watch natural behaviour at your own unhurried pace.

Weather & Climate during a Tanzania Safari in March

March is a month of transition in northern Tanzania. The early weeks often remain fairly dry and warm, continuing the short dry spell, while the long rains usually begin during the second half of the month. Expect warm days in the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, typically in the mid to high twenties Celsius, with rising humidity. Rain tends to fall as heavy afternoon or evening storms rather than all-day drizzle at first. The Ngorongoro highlands are cool and can be misty. Zanzibar is hot and humid, with showers increasing. Pack light layers, a fleece and a rain jacket.

Wildlife and Animals

March wildlife viewing still revolves around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where the migration herds graze the green short-grass plains with their growing calves. Lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals stay close to the herds, and hunts are frequent. Late in the month, if the rains are strong, some herds may begin drifting toward the central and western Serengeti. Ngorongoro Crater offers reliable Big Five viewing, including black rhino. Tarangire is quiet, with resident elephants and giraffes, and Lake Manyara is lush and lively. Many antelope still have young, and warthog piglets appear. Bird and insect life also flourishes.

Tanzania Safari in March Birds

March remains an excellent month for birding in Tanzania. Palearctic migrants from Europe and Asia are still present before most head north around April, and many resident species are breeding in the green, insect-rich conditions. Look for storks, rollers, bee-eaters and raptors on the open plains, plus flamingos, pelicans and waders at Lake Manyara and the Ndutu lakes. Tarangire is rewarding for hornbills, barbets and lovebirds. Weavers and widowbirds show their brightest colours. Rain showers often trigger insect emergences that draw feeding flocks. Ask your private guide to plan a dedicated birding morning. Bring binoculars for everyone travelling.

Where to go during a Tanzania Safari in March

In March the migration herds are usually still in the south of the Serengeti ecosystem, so strong itineraries spend several nights in Ndutu or the southern Serengeti, then add the central Serengeti in case the herds begin to move. The Ngorongoro Crater is reliable year-round, while Tarangire and Lake Manyara are green, quiet and full of birds. Arusha National Park suits a gentle first or last day. Each area below explains why it is worth visiting in March and how long to stay. Your guide will adjust the plan if the rains move the herds.

Top pick

Ndutu Plains

Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, usually holds large herds in March while the short grass remains green. Calves are growing fast, and lions, cheetahs and hyenas are constantly active. Off-road driving is permitted in parts of the area, so your private guide can reach sightings respectfully and follow the herds as they move. Late births still occur.

Things to do in Tanzania Safari in March

March offers a wide range of experiences beyond game drives. The herds and their calves still fill the southern plains, balloon flights reveal the green landscape from above, and walks and cultural visits add depth to your trip. Early March remains a good time to climb Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, and Zanzibar offers warm water before the heaviest rains. Mix active and relaxing days to suit your interests, and let your private planner arrange timings, permits and transfers around the changing weather. Each activity below shows where it happens and how long to allow.

What to expect on a Tanzania Safari in March

Knowing what to expect makes a March safari more enjoyable. This is a shoulder month: the first weeks often feel like the dry season, while the second half usually brings the start of the long rains. Wildlife remains excellent in the south, crowds are lighter and some lodges offer lower green-season rates. Roads on the southern plains can become muddy after storms, and some seasonal camps prepare to close or move. Here is what a typical March safari day and trip feel like, from game drives and weather to lodges, roads and photography. Your guide adapts every day accordingly.

Early Starts, Flexible Afternoons - Tanzania safari in March

Early Starts, Flexible Afternoons

Most March days begin around sunrise, when the light is soft and predators are active. Mornings are often bright and dry, so many guides plan longer morning drives and keep afternoons flexible in case storms arrive. You return to camp before park closing time, often with dramatic skies and rainbows over the plains. Bring a light jacket.

Tanzania Safari in March crowds

March is generally quieter than January and February. The calving peak has passed, school holiday travel is limited in many countries, and the approach of the long rains keeps some visitors away. Ndutu and the southern Serengeti still attract steady interest because the herds are there, but sightings are rarely crowded. Ngorongoro Crater remains the busiest single area, as it is throughout the year. Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park feel very peaceful. Easter can fall in March in some years, which may increase demand for a few days. Early starts make sightings feel even more personal.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari in March

The first half of March is usually the best part of the month for a safari. The herds are typically still on the southern plains, weather is often fairly dry, and seasonal camps in Ndutu are open. The second half brings the start of the long rains, with heavier storms, muddier tracks and lower green-season rates at some lodges. For Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, aim for early March, before the rains settle in. Zanzibar is also better early in the month. Easter dates move each year and may affect demand. Whatever your dates, keep some flexibility in your plans.

Tanzania Safari in March: Pros and cons

March is a month of balance, and its trade-offs are worth understanding before you book. On the positive side, the herds are usually still in the south, predators are active, landscapes are lush and crowds are lighter, with some lodges offering lower green-season rates. On the other hand, the long rains usually begin later in the month, roads can become muddy and some seasonal camps close or move. Weigh these points against your dates, budget and flexibility to decide whether March suits your private tailor-made safari. The six points below summarise the main advantages and drawbacks to consider carefully.

Migration Still in the South - Tanzania safari in March
Advantage

Migration Still in the South

The wildebeest and zebra herds usually remain on the southern plains through much of March, often with young calves at foot. This means you can still enjoy the migration in a compact, accessible area, combining it easily with the Ngorongoro Crater, without the long journeys needed later in the year to reach the northern herds.

Challenging Tracks After Rain

Events during a Tanzania Safari in March

March has no fixed national public holidays in Tanzania, so travel normally runs smoothly. However, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and in some years they fall in March, which can increase demand at lodges and on flights. The Kilimanjaro Marathon in Moshi is usually held in late February or early March. In nature, the main events are the herds with growing calves on the southern plains and the arrival of the long rains, usually in the second half of the month. Migrant birds remain until around April. Ramadan and Eid follow the lunar calendar and vary.

Safari Prices & Costs

March is a shoulder month in northern Tanzania, so understanding what shapes the cost of a private safari helps you find good value. The main factors are your choice of lodges and camps, how many nights you spend near the herds, whether you drive or fly, park and conservation fees, and how many people travel together. Some properties introduce lower green-season rates later in March. Rates change by year and by property, so we quote every tailor-made itinerary individually rather than publishing fixed prices. Ask us for a detailed quote for your preferred dates.

Travel Tips

A little preparation makes a March safari smoother and more rewarding. Because conditions change during the month, the most useful step is choosing your dates carefully, ideally early March for drier weather and the widest camp choice. It also helps to pack for rain, allow flexibility in your route, consider flights to avoid muddy roads and organise visas and health precautions in advance. These tips come from our Arusha-based guides and planners, who run private safaris throughout the shoulder season. Use them alongside the rest of this guide when planning your trip.

Planning

Travel Early in the Month

If your dates are flexible, travelling in the first half of March usually brings drier weather, open seasonal camps and herds still on the southern plains. Later dates bring heavier rain but also lower green-season rates at some lodges. Tell us your priorities, and we will recommend the best timing for your trip. We explain each trade-off clearly.

The herds respond to rainfall, so a flexible plan with nights in both Ndutu and the central Serengeti helps you follow them if they start to move. Your guide also adjusts daily timings around storms, often driving longer in the morning. Allow extra time for road transfers that can be slower after heavy rain. Patience pays off.

Make the Most of Storm Light

March storms create dramatic skies, rainbows and soft light that photographers love. Bring a telephoto lens for predators and calves, a wider lens for landscapes, and rain covers for your gear. What to Bring

Packing for a March safari means preparing for warm days, cool highland nights and increasing rain. Choose light, quick-drying clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive or beige, and avoid dark blue, black and bright white. A reliable waterproof jacket is essential, along with a warm fleece for early drives and evenings on the Ngorongoro rim. Protect cameras and electronics with dry bags or rain covers. If you fly in light aircraft, pack in a soft duffel bag within the weight limit. Climbers need full waterproof and cold-weather gear for the mountain. Binoculars for everyone are worthwhile.

How to get there

Most March safaris begin at Kilimanjaro International Airport, located between Arusha and Moshi and served by international flights through major hubs in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Your guide meets you on arrival and transfers you to Arusha, the gateway to the northern parks. From Arusha you can drive via Tarangire or Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands to Ndutu, or fly by light aircraft to a Serengeti or Ndutu airstrip, which is especially useful once the rains begin. Zanzibar is a short domestic flight away, and some travellers arrive via Dar es Salaam. We arrange every transfer.

Malaria & safety

Malaria is present in most safari areas and on Zanzibar, and mosquito numbers usually rise as the long rains begin in March, so prevention is especially important. Ask a travel clinic about suitable antimalarial medication, use repellent, wear long sleeves after dusk and sleep under nets where provided. Tanzania is welcoming and private safaris are well organised, but sensible precautions apply. Follow your guide’s instructions around wildlife, stay in the vehicle unless advised otherwise, keep valuables secure in towns and drink bottled or filtered water. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended. Carry basic first aid.
