Rubondo Island National Park is one of Tanzania's most peaceful and least visited safari destinations. The park protects Rubondo Island and a cluster of smaller islets in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. Most of the main island is cloaked in tall evergreen forest that opens onto papyrus swamps, grassy glades and sandy coves, so a visit here feels more like a tropical island retreat than a classic savannah game drive.
What makes Rubondo special is its unusual wildlife story. Shy sitatunga antelope, hippos and Nile crocodiles are long-time residents, while chimpanzees, elephants and giraffes were introduced to the island decades ago as part of a conservation effort. Today travelers can join guided chimpanzee tracking walks, glide along the shore by boat, fish for Nile perch on a catch-and-release basis and enjoy superb birding with African fish eagles on almost every headland. With very few visitors and no crowds, Rubondo Island National Park pairs beautifully with the Serengeti for travelers who want to add quiet forest, water and island scenery to a northern Tanzania safari.
The experiences that make this Lake Victoria island unlike any other Tanzanian park.
Follow experienced rangers into the forest to search for Rubondo's chimpanzees, descendants of animals released on the island decades ago. The chimps are less habituated than those in western Tanzania, so sightings are never guaranteed, but the walk itself through quiet island forest is memorable.
Rubondo is one of the best places in East Africa to spot the elusive sitatunga, a swamp-loving antelope with splayed hooves. Boat trips along the papyrus fringe also reveal hippos, Nile crocodiles, spotted-necked otters and monitor lizards basking on the rocks.
Anglers come for Nile perch and tilapia in the deep, clear water around the island. Fishing inside the park is usually run on a catch-and-release basis with a permit, making it a relaxed, conservation-minded activity that pairs well with sunset on the lake.
African fish eagles call from almost every headland, and herons, kingfishers, cormorants and storks line the shore. Gentle boat excursions around the island and its islets are a highlight for birders and photographers, and a restful break from long safari drives.
Every traveler experiences Rubondo differently. Choose the safari style that suits you, and Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris will tailor a private itinerary around your dates, budget and interests.

Rubondo Island National Park lies in the southwest part of Lake Victoria in northwest Tanzania, not far from the town of Geita and within reach of the city of Mwanza. The park covers Rubondo Island itself plus several smaller surrounding islets and a wide belt of protected lake water, making it one of the few island national parks in East Africa.
Rubondo offers something rare in Tanzania: a genuinely uncrowded wilderness where forest, lake and wildlife meet. You can track chimpanzees on foot, search for sitatunga from a boat, fish for Nile perch and watch fish eagles over calm water, often without seeing another group all day. It is ideal for repeat safari travelers and anyone who values peace and variety.
Rubondo was first protected as a game reserve in the 1960s and was upgraded to national park status in 1977. It is managed by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). Its long protected history is one reason the island's forest remains in such good condition, with very little development beyond a small number of park and visitor facilities.
The park is modest in size compared with the giant savannah parks. Its total protected area is roughly 450 square kilometers, with around half of that being land and the rest lake water around the islands. Rubondo Island itself is long and narrow, running roughly north to south, so most activities are within easy reach of the lodge areas.
Unlike the open plains of the Serengeti, Rubondo is mostly forest surrounded by water, and many activities happen on foot or by boat rather than in a safari vehicle. Visitor numbers are very low, the atmosphere is quiet and intimate, and the wildlife mix includes island residents such as sitatunga alongside species introduced to the island decades ago.
Some are and some are not. Sitatunga, hippos, crocodiles, bushbuck, vervet monkeys and otters are native to the island area. Chimpanzees, elephants and giraffes, among others, were introduced from the 1960s onward as part of conservation efforts. Today these introduced populations roam freely and form part of the island's unusual and fascinating ecosystem.
Rubondo is best enjoyed as part of a wider trip rather than a first safari on its own, because big game viewing is limited compared with the Serengeti. First-time visitors who combine the Serengeti with a few nights on Rubondo, however, get a wonderful contrast of plains game followed by forest walks, boat trips and island calm.
Two to three nights is ideal for most travelers. This allows at least one chimpanzee tracking attempt, a boat safari, a forest or shoreline walk and some time for fishing or birding. Keen anglers and birders often enjoy staying longer, since the relaxed pace and changing light on the lake are a big part of Rubondo's appeal.
No. Rubondo is one of the least visited national parks in Tanzania, largely because it takes a little more effort to reach. Accommodation on the island is limited, so you are likely to share trails and waters with only a handful of other guests. That exclusivity is a major reason experienced travelers choose it.
Accommodation on the island is limited to a small number of options, typically a comfortable lakeside camp and simpler park-run facilities such as bandas. Availability can be tight in popular months, so it is wise to book well in advance. We will recommend the option that best suits your budget and comfort level when planning your trip.
Traditional game drives are not the main focus here. The island has a limited track network and dense forest, so exploration is mainly on guided walks, by boat and on chimpanzee tracking excursions. This slower, more immersive style of exploring is part of what makes Rubondo such a refreshing change from vehicle-based safaris.
Families with older children who enjoy walking, boating and nature can have a wonderful time on Rubondo. Minimum age rules may apply to chimpanzee tracking and some walks, and these are set by the park authority, so check with us when booking. Younger children can still enjoy boat trips, birding and the peaceful lakeside setting.
Rubondo pairs naturally with the Serengeti, especially the western corridor, as charter flights can link the two. Many travelers also combine it with the Ngorongoro Crater, or add a beach finish in Zanzibar. For a primate-focused journey, it can be linked with the chimpanzee parks of western Tanzania, though that requires more flying.
Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris is a Tanzania-based operator that designs private, tailor-made safaris. Because Rubondo involves charter flights, boat transfers and limited accommodation, careful planning matters. We handle the logistics, match the island to the rest of your itinerary and stay in touch with 24/7 support throughout your journey.
Yes. Every Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris trip is built around your interests, whether that is chimpanzees, birding, fishing or simply relaxing by the lake. We can shape a short Rubondo add-on to a Serengeti safari or a longer lake-and-savannah journey, adjusting pace, comfort level and budget to suit you.
Our Rubondo packages typically include accommodation, meals on the island, park fees, guided activities as agreed and the transfers or flights needed to reach the park. Exact inclusions vary with each tailor-made itinerary, so Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris provides a clear, written breakdown before you confirm, with no hidden surprises.
Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris works with experienced local guides who know northern and western Tanzania well, and on Rubondo you also walk with park rangers who know the island's trails and wildlife closely. Together they help you understand the island's history, ecology and wildlife while keeping safety and respect for nature at the heart of every activity.
