The Serengeti divides into distinct regions. Central Seronera offers reliable year-round big cat sightings along its rivers. The southern plains and Ndutu host the migration herds and calving from December to March. The Western Corridor and Grumeti River are best from late May to July, known for crocodiles and early river crossings. The remote northern Serengeti around Kogatende sees Mara River crossings from July to October. The eastern kopjes and Gol plains suit cheetah lovers seeking quiet, open country with few other vehicles.

The Great Migration moves in a yearly loop driven by rain and fresh grass. From December to March, herds graze the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, with most calves born around late January and February. During the long rains from March to May they drift north-west, reaching the Western Corridor and Grumeti from late May to July. From July to October they cross the Mara River in the north, peaking around August and September. In November, the short rains draw the herds back toward the southern plains. Timing always varies.

Plan at least three nights in the Serengeti to appreciate its scale and wildlife, and four to five nights if the Great Migration is your priority. Many private trips split time between two regions, such as central Seronera and the north or south, to follow both resident predators and migrating herds. Shorter fly-in safaris of two nights work well when combined with Zanzibar. A full northern circuit trip including Ngorongoro and Tarangire usually takes seven to ten days, depending on your pace and interests.

Game drives are the heart of any Serengeti trip, but there is much more to enjoy. A sunrise hot-air balloon flight glides over the plains, followed by a bush breakfast. Guided walking safaris with armed rangers reveal tracks, insects and plants up close in permitted areas. Picnic lunches under acacias, sundowners on kopjes and stargazing at camp add memorable moments. Photographers appreciate the private vehicle's space, flexible timing and roof hatch for clear, steady shots at every sighting, whether morning or late afternoon light.

Most Serengeti trips begin in Arusha, near Kilimanjaro International Airport. You can drive via Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, enjoying game viewing along the way, which takes most of a day to reach central Serengeti. Alternatively, scheduled light aircraft fly from Arusha or Zanzibar to Serengeti airstrips in about one to two hours.
