Rubondo Island National Park Facts: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rubondo Island National Park known for?

Rubondo Island is known for its peaceful island forest, chimpanzees, the shy sitatunga antelope and excellent birdlife on Lake Victoria. It receives very few visitors, so it offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience quite different from mainland safaris.

How do you get to Rubondo Island?

Most visitors fly by light-aircraft charter to the island’s airstrip, often from the Serengeti or Mwanza. It is also possible to reach the island by road and boat from the mainland, which takes longer.

Can you see chimpanzees on Rubondo?

Chimpanzees live on Rubondo Island, and guided tracking may be possible. Sightings are not guaranteed, and conditions vary, so we always discuss current options with you when planning your visit.

How long should I stay on Rubondo Island?

Two to three nights is ideal to enjoy forest walks, a boat trip to look for sitatunga and birds, and time to relax on the lake. Rubondo combines well with the western Serengeti on a private itinerary.
