With more than 1,000 recorded bird species, Tanzania is one of Africa’s top birding destinations. Its mix of savannah, soda lakes, highland forest, wetlands and coast means even non-birders come home amazed by the colour and variety they have seen on safari.
| Destination | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Lake Manyara | Flamingos, pelicans, storks, crowned hornbills in the forest |
| Lake Natron | A key breeding site for lesser flamingos |
| Tarangire | Yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills, raptors |
| Serengeti | Ostriches, secretary birds, vultures, eagles |
| Ngorongoro | Kori bustards, crowned cranes, highland forest birds |
| Arusha National Park | Forest species, waterbirds on the Momella Lakes |
Birding is good all year, but the green season from about November to April is the most rewarding. Migrant species arrive from Europe and Asia, and many resident birds are in bright breeding plumage. The dry season from June to October is still excellent for raptors and big game.
Tanzania has recorded more than 1,000 bird species, including many found only in East Africa. Its range of habitats, from soda lakes to mountain forest, makes it one of the richest birding countries on the continent.

Lake Natron is a major breeding site for lesser flamingos. They are also often seen at Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater’s Lake Magadi and the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park, depending on water levels.
Yes. Most northern parks offer superb birding alongside big game. We can plan a private safari with extra time at birding hotspots and a guide who loves birds.
Share your target species and our Arusha team will design a private tailor-made birding and wildlife safari.
