Ngorongoro Crater is worth visiting in every month, because its wildlife lives on the crater floor all year round. What changes is the weather, the scenery and the number of vehicles. From December to March the crater is green and the Great Migration usually grazes the nearby Ndutu plains, with calving peaking in February. April and May bring the long rains and the quietest crater, while June to October is dry, cool on the rim and busy. This Ngorongoro month-by-month guide explains weather, wildlife, crowds and costs, so you can plan your private tailor-made safari at the right time.
The best time to visit Ngorongoro Crater is June to October for dry weather and easy wildlife viewing, or December to March to combine the crater with the calving season at Ndutu. April and May are the wettest and quietest months, with lower green-season rates at some lodges. Black rhino, lions and elephants live in the crater all year.

For dry weather and short grass, June to October is usually best, with July and August the busiest. For a green crater combined with the wildebeest calving season at Ndutu, choose January or February. For the quietest crater floor, consider April, May or early November.
Yes. The crater floor has permanent water and grazing, so lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, zebra, wildebeest and black rhino live there all year. Only the weather, the scenery and the number of vehicles change from month to month.
Ngorongoro has short rains in November and December and long rains from March to May, with April usually the wettest month. Rain often falls as afternoon showers, the crater turns lush and green, and the rim can be misty, cold and muddy.
The rim sits roughly 2,200 to 2,400 metres above sea level, so evenings and early mornings are cool all year. June to August is coldest, when rim nights can drop to about 5 °C, so pack a warm fleece, jacket and layers for early descents.
The crater is usually quietest in April and May during the long rains, and calmer in early November and October. July, August, Christmas to New Year and the February calving weeks are the busiest, so we descend early to enjoy sightings before most vehicles arrive.
The migration does not enter the crater itself, but from about December to March the herds usually graze the Ndutu plains in the southern Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Many private safaris combine a crater day with several nights at Ndutu during the calving season.
A private Ngorongoro Crater safari typically costs from about $200 to $2,500 per person per day, depending mostly on your accommodation, from rim camping to high-end luxury lodges. Conservation fees and the crater service fee are usually included in your quote.
