Kilimanjaro Climbing Routes FAQs

What are the main Kilimanjaro climbing routes?

The main Kilimanjaro climbing routes are Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Umbwe and the Northern Circuit. Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation, while the others use tents. Machame and Lemosho are popular for scenery, Rongai approaches from the north, Umbwe is steep and direct, and the Northern Circuit is the longest. All lead to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Our individual route guides explain each one in detail so you can compare them easily.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for beginners?

For most beginners, the Lemosho or Machame Route on a seven or eight-day itinerary is the best choice. Both offer gradual acclimatisation and varied scenery without technical climbing. Rongai is a gentler option for those who prefer a quieter, drier approach. Shorter routes can feel harder because the body has less time to adjust. We will recommend a route based on your fitness and time.

Which Kilimanjaro route is the most scenic?

The Lemosho Route and the Northern Circuit are widely considered the most scenic Kilimanjaro routes. Both cross the Shira Plateau with views of Kibo's glaciers, and the Northern Circuit continues around the quieter northern slopes. Machame is also beautiful, especially at the Barranco Valley. Scenery on every route depends on weather, so dry season dates improve your views. Photographers often prefer longer routes because they offer more varied light and landscapes.

How many days does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Kilimanjaro takes five to nine days depending on the route. Marangu and Machame can be done in five or six days, Lemosho in six to eight days and the Northern Circuit in about nine. More days generally mean better acclimatisation and a more enjoyable climb. We usually suggest at least seven days for first-time climbers. Arrival and departure days in Arusha or Moshi are added to the total trip length.

Do I need a guide to climb Kilimanjaro?

Yes, you need a guide to climb Kilimanjaro, because licensed guides are mandatory for every trek in Kilimanjaro National Park. A professional crew also includes porters and a cook who carry equipment and prepare meals. With Foot Slopes your climb is private, so your guides focus only on you, monitoring your pace and wellbeing throughout the route. Your crew also handles camp setup, water preparation and daily safety checks on the mountain.

Which Kilimanjaro route is the hardest?

The Umbwe Route is generally considered the hardest Kilimanjaro route because it climbs steeply and directly with limited acclimatisation time. It suits experienced, fit hikers who are comfortable at altitude. The final summit night is demanding on every route. If you want a challenge with better acclimatisation, consider a longer Lemosho or Northern Circuit itinerary instead. Your guides will set a slow, steady pace whichever route you choose.
