A Tanzania safari in October comes at the end of the long dry season, when the bush turns golden, water is scarce and wildlife gathers around rivers and permanent pools. The Great Migration herds are usually still in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, where crossings continue, although they become less predictable as the month goes on. Tarangire is at its best, with large elephant herds along the river, while Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Zanzibar all enjoy dry conditions. This guide covers weather, wildlife, crowds, costs, packages and lodges to help you plan a private tailor-made safari in October.
Yes. October is an excellent month for a Tanzania safari. It is the end of the dry season, so wildlife concentrates around water, the migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, Tarangire’s elephant herds peak, visitor numbers ease after September, and Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are both dry.
October is the final month of the long dry season and one of the most rewarding times for game viewing in northern Tanzania. Thin vegetation and shrinking water sources draw animals into predictable places, so sightings are frequent and close. The migration herds are usually in the far north of the Serengeti, Tarangire’s elephants gather in remarkable numbers, and visitor numbers are lower than in August and September. With dry mountain trails and pleasant beach weather on Zanzibar, October suits a private tailor-made safari that combines several highlights in one well-paced trip.

In October the migration herds are usually around Kogatende and the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. Crossings still happen as the herds move back and forth, although they are less frequent than in August and September. Your private guide can wait patiently at the river with you, which is the key to seeing a crossing unfold.
Kogatende, northern Serengeti
Most of October

Tarangire is at its finest in October, when the Tarangire River is the main water source for miles around. Large elephant herds, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffes gather along its banks among ancient baobabs. Lions and leopards follow the prey, making this compact park one of the most rewarding stops of the month. Allow two nights to enjoy it.

By October the grass is short and many waterholes have dried up, so animals concentrate near rivers, springs and permanent pools. Open country makes spotting easier, and predators often hunt close to water. Sightings are frequent across the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, rewarding first-time visitors and keen photographers alike. Even short drives can be remarkably productive.
Short, open
Early morning

October remains part of the dry-season high season, but visitor numbers usually ease after the August and September peak. Northern Serengeti camps still fill, yet game drives feel calmer and lodge availability improves, especially later in the month. A private vehicle and an early start help you enjoy more peaceful sightings. Later October is usually the calmest period.
Moderate
Better late in month

October days are mostly dry, sunny and warm, with golden grassland and dusty tracks. Temperatures rise as the month progresses, and the first short-rain showers may arrive late in October in some years. Mornings and evenings on the Ngorongoro highlands stay cool, so a fleece remains useful. Dry roads also make long drives between the parks easier.

October sits within one of the two main Kilimanjaro climbing windows, and Mount Meru is usually dry and clear too. Zanzibar is dry, breezy and pleasantly warm, ideal for unwinding after game drives. We link the northern parks, the mountains and the coast by road and light aircraft in one smooth private itinerary. Weather risks are low throughout.

October is the last month of the long dry season in northern Tanzania. Days are mostly sunny and warm, typically in the mid to high twenties Celsius in the Serengeti and Tarangire, and they become hotter as the month goes on. Rain is rare, although the first short-rain showers can arrive late in October in some years, bringing dramatic clouds. Tracks are dusty and the grass is short and golden. The Ngorongoro highlands remain cool at night and early morning. Zanzibar is dry and breezy. Pack light layers, a warm fleece, a scarf for dust and sunscreen. Hydrate well.
October wildlife viewing is shaped by the dry season. Animals stay close to permanent water, so rivers, springs and swamps become reliable places for sightings. The migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende, crossing the Mara River as they search for grazing, before turning south once rains arrive. Tarangire hosts some of its largest elephant gatherings of the year along the river. Ngorongoro Crater offers dependable Big Five viewing, including black rhino. Lions, leopards and cheetahs hunt in open, short grass, and crocodiles wait in the Mara for crossing herds. Visibility is excellent. Expect memorable sightings.
October is a good month for birding, especially for resident species that gather around water in the dry season. Tarangire is excellent for yellow-collared lovebirds, hornbills, barbets and raptors, while kori bustards and secretarybirds stride across the open Serengeti plains. Vultures are easy to watch at kills, and Lake Manyara’s shoreline attracts pelicans, storks and waders. Late in the month the first Palearctic migrants from Europe and Asia may begin to arrive, with numbers building from November. Short grass makes ground birds easier to see. Ask your private guide for a birding morning and carry good binoculars. Patience pays.
Where you go in October depends on whether the migration is your main goal. The herds are usually in the northern Serengeti, so migration-focused itineraries spend several nights near Kogatende and the Mara River, often reached by light aircraft. Tarangire is outstanding at this time, the Ngorongoro Crater is reliable all year, and the central Serengeti offers excellent resident predators. Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park make easy additions. Choose the areas below to match your interests and the time you have available. Each option below includes ideal nights and the main reasons to go.

The northern Serengeti around Kogatende is where the migration herds usually spend October, moving between grazing areas on both sides of the Mara River. Crossings are still possible, though less frequent than earlier in the season. It is remote, so flying in saves time, and three nights give you a good chance of action. Book camps early.

Tarangire is one of the best parks in Tanzania in October. The river draws large elephant herds, plus buffalo, zebra, giraffes, impala and their predators. Baobabs stand bare and silver in the dry landscape, and birdlife is rich. It is only a few hours from Arusha, making it an ideal first stop. Sunsets over the river are memorable.

Seronera has year-round water along its river valleys, so resident lions, leopards and cheetahs are reliable even when the herds are far north. It is a natural stop between the Ngorongoro Crater and the northern Serengeti on a drive route, breaking a long journey with excellent big-cat viewing on the way. Comfortable lodges make it an easy overnight.

The crater floor is dry and open in October, with permanent springs and swamps that keep buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, lions, hyenas and elephants close by. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to look for black rhino. Nights on the forested rim are cool, so pack warm layers for early descents. Arrive early for quieter viewing.

Lake Manyara stays green in October thanks to its groundwater forest, which contrasts with the dry plains elsewhere. Elephants, baboons, giraffes and hippos are regular sightings, and the park’s lions sometimes rest in trees. The lake shore attracts pelicans and storks. A half or full day fits neatly between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Birders should allow extra time.

Arusha National Park is close to town and ideal for your first or last day. In October, clear mornings often reveal Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, and you can enjoy game drives, guided walks with a ranger and canoeing on the Momella Lakes when conditions allow. Colobus monkeys and giraffes are common. It is perfect before or after flights.

October offers a wide choice of experiences beyond classic game drives. Dry weather keeps roads and trails in good condition, and wildlife concentrated around water makes every outing productive. You can wait for river crossings with a specialist guide, float over the plains in a hot-air balloon, walk with an armed ranger, meet local communities, climb a mountain or relax on the beach. Mix active and restful days to match your energy, and let your planner arrange timings, permits and transfers for you. Each activity below includes where it happens and how long it takes.

Spend full days in the northern Serengeti with a picnic lunch, watching the herds gather on the riverbanks. Crossings can take hours to build, so a private vehicle lets you choose when to wait and when to move. Your guide reads the herds and positions you respectfully at the best crossing points. Patience is richly rewarded here.

A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti shows the vast golden plains from above in clear October air. Flights operate in suitable weather from set launch sites, including in the central and northern Serengeti, and usually finish with a bush breakfast. Booking ahead is wise, as places are limited. Flights cost extra and depend on the weather.

Walking with an armed ranger reveals tracks, plants, insects and birds you would miss from a vehicle. In October short grass makes walking easier and visibility better. Walks are possible in Arusha National Park, selected areas around Tarangire and parts of the conservation areas, ideally early in the morning before the heat builds. Wear neutral colours and sturdy shoes.

Visit a Maasai community in the Ngorongoro highlands, or travel to Lake Eyasi to spend a morning with Hadzabe hunter-gatherers and Datoga blacksmiths. Dry roads make the Eyasi detour straightforward in October. These visits, arranged respectfully with local guides, add human context and fit well between the crater and the Serengeti. Always ask before photographing people.

October falls within the June to October Kilimanjaro climbing window, with generally dry trails and clear views, and slightly warmer conditions than July or August. Summit night is still bitterly cold. Mount Meru, inside Arusha National Park, is a scenic shorter climb with wildlife on its lower slopes and excellent acclimatisation. We arrange both climbs with experienced mountain crews.

Finish your trip on Zanzibar, which is dry, breezy and warm in October. Explore Stone Town’s historic alleys, take a spice tour, snorkel the reefs or simply rest on white sand after early safari starts. A short flight from Arusha or the Serengeti connects the bush and beach without long transfers. It is a relaxing end to an active trip.

Knowing what to expect helps you plan a smoother October safari. This is still dry-season high season, so popular camps in the northern Serengeti fill early, although the busiest weeks of August and September have passed. Days are sunny, warm and dusty, nights are cool in the highlands, and wildlife is concentrated around water. Distances between the northern Serengeti and other parks are long, so many travellers fly one way. Here is what a typical October safari day and trip feel like, from game drives and weather to lodges, roads, flights and photography. Each point includes practical planning advice.

Most days begin at sunrise, when the light is soft and predators are active. Middays are hot, so many guests rest at camp or enjoy a shaded picnic before an afternoon drive. Near the Mara River you may choose a full day to wait for crossings. Evenings bring cooler air and starry skies. Your guide adapts the pace to you.

By October the plains are golden and open, many trees are leafless, and baobabs stand silver against blue skies. Dust hangs in the air in places, creating warm, hazy light at dawn and dusk. It is a classic East African dry-season look that photographers love for atmosphere and clear sightlines. Sunrise and sunset are especially photogenic now.

Crossings are unpredictable. Herds may gather for hours and then turn away, or cross suddenly at a different point. In October the herds are more scattered than in August, so some days bring several crossings and others none. Patience, flexibility and several nights in the north make a real difference. Your guide knows the most reliable crossing points.

Most of October is dry, but in some years the first short-rain showers arrive in the last week or so. They usually fall in the afternoon or evening, settle the dust and freshen the air. Early rain can also trigger the herds to start moving south, so your guide watches the weather closely. Pack a light rain jacket.

The northern Serengeti is a long drive from Arusha, usually broken by nights in Ngorongoro and the central Serengeti. Light-aircraft flights to Kogatende or other northern airstrips save a full day or more. Many October itineraries drive in through the parks and fly out, balancing scenery, comfort and time. Your planner will recommend the best combination for your route.

Seasonal and mobile tented camps operate in the northern Serengeti during the migration months, offering en-suite tents close to the river. Permanent lodges sit on the Ngorongoro rim, in Karatu and around Tarangire. Expect warm hospitality, early breakfasts, limited Wi-Fi in remote camps and cool nights in the highlands. Charging is usually available, sometimes only at set hours.

October is quieter than the August and September peak, although it is still part of the dry-season high season. The northern Serengeti around Kogatende remains popular because the herds are there, and the best crossing points can draw several vehicles. Ngorongoro Crater is busy throughout the year, so early descents help. Tarangire is busier than in the green season because its wildlife is at its best. Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park feel relaxed. Later in October, numbers usually drop further. A private vehicle, flexible timing and a guide who knows quieter tracks keep sightings enjoyable. Book early.
Within October, timing depends on your priorities. The first half of the month is usually best for Mara River crossings, because the herds are more likely to be concentrated in the northern Serengeti before any rain. The second half is quieter, availability improves and the light is wonderful, but the herds may start drifting south-east if early showers arrive. Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the central Serengeti are excellent all month. Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru remain dry throughout, and Zanzibar is pleasant in any week. Nyerere Day on 14 October is a public holiday. Parks operate normally that day.
Every month has trade-offs, and October is no exception. It offers superb dry-season wildlife viewing, the chance of Mara River crossings, Tarangire at its best and easy combinations with the mountains and Zanzibar, with fewer visitors than the peak months. On the other hand, it is still high season, the northern Serengeti is remote, crossings are less frequent than in August, and the landscape is dry and dusty. Weighing these points against your budget, dates and interests helps you decide whether October suits your private tailor-made safari. The six points below summarise the main advantages and drawbacks to consider.

Dry conditions push animals toward rivers and permanent water, so sightings are frequent, close and predictable. Short grass improves visibility for spotting predators. This is a major advantage for first-time visitors with limited days, and it makes Tarangire, the crater and the central Serengeti especially productive. Leopards are also easier to find in the leafless trees.
Reliable sightings
Tarangire, crater

October keeps the benefits of the dry season but usually sees fewer visitors than the peak months. Lodges have better availability, especially later in the month, and game drives feel more relaxed. You still need to plan ahead for the northern Serengeti, but there is more choice of dates. Guides also have more freedom to choose quiet sightings.
Better availability
Later October

Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru enjoy dry conditions in October, and Zanzibar is dry, breezy and warm. This makes October one of the easiest months to combine a safari with a climb or beach stay. Weather risks are low across the whole trip, so itineraries run smoothly. Few months offer such dependable conditions on safari, mountain and coast.
Low weather risk
Climb or beach

October is still high season, so lodge and camp rates are at dry-season levels. Northern Serengeti camps are relatively few and in demand, and light-aircraft seats can sell out. Booking six to nine months ahead gives you the widest choice of camps, flights and preferred travel dates. Mid-range camps slightly further from the river help manage costs.
Higher lodge rates
Book early

By October the herds are more scattered, and crossings happen less often than in August and September. If early rain falls, some herds may begin heading south-east. Seeing a crossing is never guaranteed, so allow at least three nights in the north and travel earlier in the month if crossings are essential. Tarangire and the crater remain dependable meanwhile.
Fewer crossings
Early October, more nights

The end of the dry season brings dusty roads and hot middays, especially in Tarangire and the Serengeti. Dust can affect cameras and contact lenses, and vehicles get warm. A scarf or buff, eye drops, a camera cover and rest during the hottest hours make days far more comfortable. Lodges with pools also offer welcome afternoon relief.

October has one fixed public holiday and several natural events that shape a safari. Nyerere Day on 14 October honours Julius Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania, and banks and government offices close. Parks and lodges operate as normal. In nature, the migration herds usually remain in the northern Serengeti, with crossings of the Mara River continuing. Tarangire’s dry-season elephant gatherings peak, and the first short rains may arrive late in the month, prompting herds to turn south. Religious holidays such as Eid follow the lunar calendar, so check dates for your travel year. Wildlife watching is unaffected.
October is high season in northern Tanzania, so understanding what shapes the cost of your private safari helps you plan wisely. The biggest factors are the lodges and camps you choose, how many nights you spend in the remote northern Serengeti, whether you drive or fly, park and conservation fees, and how many people travel together. Rates change by year and property, so we quote each tailor-made itinerary individually rather than publishing fixed prices. The points below explain how each element affects your total budget. Ask us for a detailed quote for your preferred dates.

Accommodation is usually the largest part of a safari budget. In October, camps in the northern Serengeti and around Tarangire charge dry-season high-season rates. Some properties begin shoulder pricing toward the end of the month. Mixing luxury and mid-range stays, or staying a little further from the river, balances comfort and cost. We explain every option clearly when quoting.

Each national park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area charge entry and concession fees, usually per person per day, and Ngorongoro Crater has a separate vehicle descent fee. More days in the parks mean more fees. They are set by the authorities and can change, so we include current fees in every private quote. We pay these on your behalf.

Flying to the northern Serengeti saves long road days but adds to the budget. Light-aircraft seats have baggage limits, usually soft bags only. A popular October compromise is to drive through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the central Serengeti, then fly out from a northern airstrip to Arusha or Zanzibar. Booking flights early also secures preferred times in this busy season.

Total cost grows with each night, but rushing to the northern Serengeti reduces your chances at the river. A balanced plan includes two nights in Tarangire, one or two at the crater, one in the central Serengeti and three in the north. Adding Zanzibar or a climb extends trip and budget. We help match trip length to your budget.

Zanzibar makes a relaxing finish afterwards.

Where you stay in October matters, because the herds are in the far north of the Serengeti and the best-located camps are limited. Below are a selection of properties we often use in October, from tented camps to lodges with views. Every destination links to a fuller guide.

October is part of the June to October dry climbing season on Kilimanjaro. Trails are usually dry, skies are often clear, and conditions are slightly warmer than in mid-year, though summit night remains well below freezing. Routes such as the Machame or Lemosho give good acclimatisation. Late-month showers are possible lower down. We arrange experienced mountain crews.

Zanzibar is dry, breezy and warm in October, a very pleasant time for a beach stay after your safari. Seas are generally good for snorkelling and diving, and Stone Town is comfortable to explore on foot. Visitor numbers are moderate, so beach hotels are easier to secure than at peak times. Allow three to five nights.

The crater floor is dry and open in October, and wildlife gathers around its springs, swamps and Lake Magadi. Black rhino, lions, hyenas, buffalo and elephants are regularly seen. Dust can rise on the crater roads, and the rim is cool at night. Plan a full day inside the crater. Early descents help you avoid busier hours.

Tarangire is at its very best in October. The Tarangire River becomes a magnet for elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffes, with lions and leopards close behind. In October the Serengeti’s migration herds are usually in the north around Kogatende and the Mara River, where crossings continue but are less frequent than at the peak. The central Seronera area offers excellent resident big cats. Allow at least three nights in the north, and consider flying to save time. Seronera breaks the journey north well.

Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, is usually dry and clear in October. The three or four day climb passes through forest with buffalo and giraffe on the lower slopes, then reaches a dramatic crater rim with sunrise views of Kilimanjaro. Armed rangers accompany climbers because of the wildlife on the mountain. It is excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro.

A little preparation makes an October safari easier and more rewarding. Because this is still high season, the most important step is booking early, especially for northern Serengeti camps and light-aircraft flights. It also helps to plan your route around the herds, allow enough nights near the river, pack for dust and heat as well as cool highland nights, and organise visas and health precautions in advance. These practical tips come from our Arusha-based guides and planners, who run private safaris throughout the dry season. Use them alongside the rest of this guide when planning.

Northern Serengeti camps have limited tents, and October dates remain popular with migration travellers. Booking six to nine months ahead secures the best locations, flights and guides. If you are flexible, the second half of October usually offers better availability, although the herds may be more scattered by then. Light-aircraft seats to northern airstrips also sell out.

Late October

Plan at least three nights in the northern Serengeti so you can follow the herds and wait at the river on more than one day. Crossings cannot be predicted, and one night rarely allows enough time. Full-day drives with picnic lunches give you the best chance of being there when they happen. Travel earlier in October for crossings.

October roads can be very dusty, so pack a buff or scarf, lubricating eye drops and a cover for your camera. Glasses may be more comfortable than contact lenses. Drink plenty of water, wear a wide-brim hat and use high-factor sunscreen, as the late dry-season sun is strong. Moist wipes are handy for freshening up after long drives.

Most visitors need a Tanzanian visa, which can be applied for online through the official immigration e-visa system before travel. Check that your passport is valid for at least six months with blank pages. Carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if you arrive from, or transit through, a risk country. Rules can change, so always check current requirements.

Visit a travel clinic several weeks before you travel to discuss malaria prevention and recommended vaccines. Mosquito numbers are lower in the dry season, but precautions still matter. Use repellent and long sleeves in the evenings, stay hydrated and carry personal medication in your hand luggage. Insurance with evacuation cover is strongly recommended. Carry a small first-aid kit.

Bring a telephoto lens for predators and river action, plus a wider lens for herds and landscapes. Dust-laden air gives warm, glowing light at sunrise and sunset. Keep a blower and cleaning cloth handy, change lenses inside the vehicle, and carry spare batteries and memory cards for long days. Ask your guide to position the vehicle for the best light.

Packing for an October safari means preparing for hot, dusty days and cool highland nights. Choose light, breathable clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, olive or beige, and avoid bright white and dark blue or black in tsetse areas, especially around Tarangire. Add a warm fleece for the Ngorongoro rim and early drives, a buff or scarf for dust, and a light rain jacket in case of late-month showers. If flying in light aircraft, use a soft duffel bag within the weight limit. Climbers need specialist cold-weather gear for summit night. Pack binoculars for everyone in the vehicle.
Most October safaris begin at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which lies between Moshi and Arusha and receives international flights via major hubs in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Your guide meets you on arrival and transfers you to Arusha, the gateway to the northern parks. From Arusha you can drive through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the central Serengeti toward the north, or fly by light aircraft from Arusha Airport to a northern Serengeti airstrip. Zanzibar is reached by a short domestic flight. Some travellers arrive via Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar instead. Your planner arranges every transfer and flight connection.
Malaria is present in most safari areas and on Zanzibar. Mosquitoes are fewer in the dry October weather, but the risk does not disappear, so prevention still matters. Speak to a travel clinic about suitable antimalarial medication, use repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk and sleep under nets where provided. Tanzania is welcoming and private safaris are well organised, but sensible precautions apply. Follow your guide’s instructions around wildlife, stay inside the vehicle unless told otherwise, keep valuables secure in towns and drink bottled or filtered water. Comprehensive insurance with evacuation cover is recommended. Always travel well prepared.
Yes. October is an excellent month for a Tanzania safari. It is the end of the dry season, so wildlife gathers around water, the migration herds are usually in the northern Serengeti, Tarangire is at its best and crowds are lighter than in August.
In October the wildebeest and zebra herds are usually in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende and the Mara River. If the short rains start early, some herds begin moving south-east toward Lobo late in the month.
Yes, crossings still happen in October, but they are usually less frequent than in August and September because the herds are more scattered. Spending at least three nights in the northern Serengeti early in the month gives the best chance.
October is normally dry, as it is the last month of the long dry season. In some years the first short-rain showers arrive late in the month, usually as brief afternoon or evening rain that settles the dust.
Yes. October falls within the June to October dry climbing season, with mostly dry trails and clear views. It is slightly warmer than mid-year, but summit night is still well below freezing, so warm gear is essential.
Yes. Zanzibar is dry, breezy and warm in October, with good conditions for swimming, snorkelling and exploring Stone Town. It is a relaxed time for a beach extension after a northern Tanzania safari.
We recommend booking six to nine months ahead, especially for camps in the northern Serengeti and light-aircraft flights. Later October dates are usually easier to secure than the first half of the month.
