Tanzania Weather & Climate

Tanzania lies just south of the equator, so its weather is shaped more by altitude and rainfall than by summer and winter. Highland areas such as Arusha and the Ngorongoro rim can be cool, while the coast, Zanzibar and the low-lying southern parks are hot and humid. Knowing the pattern helps you pack well and plan the right route.

ClimateTropical, altitude-driven
Short rainsAbout Nov to Dec
Long rainsAbout Mar to May
Coolest monthsJune to August

The Two Rainy Seasons

Most of Tanzania has two rainy seasons. The short rains, roughly November to December, usually bring brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt a safari. The long rains, roughly March to May, bring heavier and longer rainfall, especially in April. Exact timing varies from year to year.

What To Pack for the Weather

  • Warm fleece or jacket for early game drives
  • Light, neutral-coloured layers
  • Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • High-factor sunscreen
  • Light rain jacket in the green season
  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • Swimwear for lodges and the beach
  • Insect repellent

Tanzania Weather FAQs

Does it get cold on a Tanzania safari?

Yes, at higher altitudes. Early mornings and evenings in Arusha, Ngorongoro and parts of the Serengeti can feel cold, especially from June to August. A warm fleece and layers are essential for game drives.

When are the rainy seasons in Tanzania?

There are usually two: the short rains around November and December, and the long rains from about March to May. Timing varies each year, and rain often falls in short bursts.

What is the weather like in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is warm and humid all year, with sea breezes keeping it comfortable. The driest months are roughly June to October and December to February, while April and May are the wettest.

Can I go on safari during the rains?

Yes. The northern parks stay open, game viewing is still good, and you benefit from fewer visitors and lower prices. Some remote camps in the south and west close during the long rains.
