Private8 Days / 7 NightsA Western Corridor wildebeest migration safari takes you to the western Serengeti from roughly late May to July, when the herds move towards Lake Victoria and cross the Grumeti River, with the most dramatic action often in June. Timing varies with rainfall each year. The Grumeti's large crocodiles, gallery forests and quieter plains make this a thrilling alternative to the famous Mara River crossings. Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris plans every trip privately, with your own guide and vehicle. Browse our Western Corridor and Great Migration packages below, and we will tailor dates and camps to you.

PrivateFlexible lengthThe wildebeest migration usually passes through the Western Corridor of the Serengeti between late May and July, with June often the peak month for Grumeti River crossings. After the long rains end, the herds leave the central plains and head west towards Lake Victoria before turning north to Kenya's border region. Exact timing varies with rainfall, so some years the movement is earlier or later. We monitor conditions through our local guides and choose camps that give you the best chance of seeing the herds.
The wildebeest cross the Grumeti River at several points in the western Serengeti and the neighbouring Grumeti reserves, depending on water levels and the direction of the herds. The Grumeti is narrower than the Mara River and often forms a chain of pools, which makes crossings less frequent but very dramatic. The river is home to enormous Nile crocodiles that wait for the herds. Your private guide will position the vehicle patiently and respect park rules so you can watch safely.
The Western Corridor and the northern Serengeti offer different migration experiences, so the best choice depends on your travel month. From late May to July, the Western Corridor has the herds and the Grumeti River crossings, with quieter roads and dramatic crocodile encounters. From July to October, the northern Serengeti around Kogatende hosts the Mara River crossings, which happen more often and are more famous. Timing always varies with rainfall, and we can combine both regions on longer private safaris.
For a Western Corridor migration safari, it is best to stay in a lodge or tented camp near the Grumeti River, in the Kirawira or Ndabaka areas, or inside the private Grumeti concessions next to the park. These locations reduce driving time and keep you close to the herds in June. Seasonal mobile camps also move into the region when the migration arrives. We select accommodation that matches your budget, from comfortable mid-range tented camps to exclusive luxury lodges with river views.
Plan at least 3 to 4 nights in the Western Corridor to give yourself a good chance of seeing a Grumeti River crossing and the predators that follow the herds. A complete private itinerary of 7 to 10 days lets you add Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the central Serengeti. Flying into the western airstrips saves time if your schedule is tight. We design the route around the latest herd movements, so you spend the most time where the wildlife action is happening.
Share your preferred travel month and comfort level, and our guides will plan a private Western Corridor safari timed to give you the best chance of witnessing the Grumeti River crossings.
