Frequently Asked Questions About Kilimanjaro Lodges

Why do I need a lodge before climbing Kilimanjaro?

A night or two before your climb lets you recover from international travel, adjust to the time zone and prepare properly. Your guide holds a pre-climb briefing and gear check at the lodge, and you can rent or buy any missing equipment before heading to the park gate.

Why stay in a lodge after the climb?

After days on the mountain, a comfortable lodge lets you rest, enjoy hot showers, good food and a proper bed, and celebrate your summit. It also gives you a buffer before your flight or before continuing to a safari or Zanzibar.

Where are the lodges for Kilimanjaro climbers located?

Most climbers stay in Moshi, the closest town to the main southern park gates, or in Arusha, a larger city with more hotel choices and the gateway to the northern safari parks. Both are within reach of Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Should I stay in Moshi or Arusha?

Moshi is closer to the Marangu, Machame and Umbwe gates, making transfers shorter. Arusha is better if you are combining your climb with a safari or prefer more dining and shopping options. We recommend the best base for your route and plans.

How many nights should I stay before and after the climb?

We recommend at least one night before and one night after your climb. Two nights before helps if you arrive on a long flight or want an acclimatization day hike, and an extra night after gives welcome rest before traveling on.

What facilities do Kilimanjaro lodges offer?

Typical facilities include en-suite rooms, hot showers, restaurants, Wi-Fi, gardens and secure storage for luggage you leave behind during the climb. Many lodges also have swimming pools and spa or massage services, perfect after summit day.

Can I store luggage at the lodge during my climb?

Yes. Most lodges offer secure storage for luggage you do not need on the mountain, such as city clothes or safari gear. You collect it when you return after the climb, making it easy to travel light on the trek.

Is a pre-climb briefing held at the lodge?

Yes. Your lead guide usually meets you at the lodge the evening before the climb to explain the route, daily schedule and safety procedures, check your gear and answer questions. It is a great chance to meet your guide and ask anything.

Are airport transfers included?

Airport transfers between Kilimanjaro International Airport and your lodge are usually included in Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris climbing packages. We also arrange transfers from the lodge to the park gate and back after your climb.

What types of lodges are available?

Options range from comfortable, good-value hotels in town to boutique lodges and luxury coffee-farm estates with mountain views, pools and spas. We match your lodge to your budget and preferences, whether you want simplicity or a luxurious recovery stay.

Can I do an acclimatization hike before the climb?

Yes. Some climbers add a day hike on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro or a Mount Meru trek before their main climb to help acclimatization. We can include extra lodge nights to fit this into your itinerary.

Can I combine my lodge stay with a safari or Zanzibar?

Yes. After your climb, many travelers rest a night then continue to a safari in Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, or fly to Zanzibar for a beach holiday. We plan all lodges, transfers and flights seamlessly.

How much do lodges before and after Kilimanjaro cost?

Prices depend on the lodge style, season, room type and number of nights. Town hotels offer good value, while boutique and luxury lodges cost more. Lodge nights are often included in our climbing packages, and every quote lists them clearly.

What should I do after summiting Kilimanjaro?

Rest, rehydrate and eat well. Enjoy a massage or a swim, collect your summit certificate and celebrate with your crew. Walking gently helps tired legs recover. If you feel unwell after descending, speak with a doctor.
