The main difference between a luxury and a mid-range Tanzania safari is the accommodation and location, not the wildlife. Mid-range safaris, about $550 to $990 per person per day, use comfortable lodges and tented camps with private bathrooms and good food. Luxury safaris, about $990 to $2,500, use exclusive camps in prime wildlife areas with larger suites, fine dining and extra services. The best time to go on safari in Tanzania is the dry season from late June to October, when wildlife gathers around rivers and waterholes and the Mara River crossings take place in the northern Serengeti. January to March is also excellent for calving season in the southern Serengeti and for green, photogenic landscapes. The long rains in April and May mean fewer visitors and lower rates.
